Woah, has it really been over a decade?
Damn. Looks like it has! So, here I am. Almost a decade into a career, with a family, mentoring UCLA grads via UCLA One (when I have time…)
And I realized it’s been years (literally) since I’ve been active on here. That made me feel bad. I like helping out future Bruins, so you know what? Here I am.
A few thoughts, over a decade out: UCLA was the best damn choice I could’ve made. I think in the insecure era of my 20s, it was hard to feel that way, but as I go into my 30s and entrench myself in my career, I’m happier every year to have attended such an incredible university. Not only did it open doors to study abroad and meeting amazing people, it gave me such a solid education that maybe only a handful of universities worldwide can provide. That said, how many universities can a hand actually hold? Hmm.
So, here’s a few thoughts from a now old (SO OLD) Bruin:
- Dammit Bruins, take advantage of your time there! I meet so many UCLA grads who tell me that they never got involved in internships, extracurriculars, clubs, activities, or made friends. STOP THAT. NOW. Go do stuff! I promise you, hand over heart, that going from a 3.8 to a 3.7 won't end your career or chances for grad school. Get out there and get involved.
- Study something quantitative while at UCLA. Please. Trust me on this-- best choice I ever made, career-wise.
- Get involved with mentorship programs! Seriously: tons of Bruins are out there willing to help out young students and recent grads with their careers. I know I do (less so now with a baby, but still!)
- You will never have more time in your life to learn and grow as a person of your own volition. Get busy being busy!
- UCLA sports will always be a difficult relationship. Learn to live with it.
So yeah, go get 'em Bruins. Ten years plus later I’m still thrilled to be a part of this family.
