Class of 2009-Who's Going to Bates?!?

ok, that's probably not until sometime in july because the papers aren't due for a while

hey, i have a question that has nothing to do with the current discussion. I'm from the midwest and no one has heard of Bates. How prestigious/well-known is bates on the east and west coasts.

Rock on midwesterners! I'm from Wisconsin/Minnesota. I don't know about the west coast, but on the east coast people (at least the ones I know) have heard of Bates and hold it in high regard. Bates has solid acceptance rates at top grad schools on the east coast too, so that's a good indication that Bates carries a good reputation. Hope that helps.

Ok im from NYC so i could tell you the kinda average response you get from people when u tell them you're going to Bates...."oh nice thats really good.."..."where is that"...."good for you (in total seriousness)".....lol those r some of the typical responses! Bates is a top notch liberal arts school with a low acceptance rate and high grad school acceptance rate with good job recruitment and excellent study abroad programs...thats why its considered in high regard. The reason why its kinda shadowed at times is because of its location, which loses some points in rankings, and its competiton with Colby and Bowdoin. Dont worry about prestige and that people havent heard of it...honestly, its not a brand name or an extremely competitive school that ppl would die to get into, but at the same time it is awesome and only ppl who've done their research and know colleges would be able to talk good abt Bates..!

hope that helps...haha

I'm from New England and whenever I tell people I'm going to Bates they definitely know about it. Bates is a very reputable school (espec. if you want to work/go to grad school in Boston)

My average dropped 9% during the last semester and my guidance counciillor is flipping out saying that i won't get in. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what he's talking about, but I'm wondering whether it's a problem just to be safe.

well 9% is kinda steep...but i HIGHLY doubt anything will happen...because they want a "successful completion" of the courses u mentioned earlier....dont worry too much but its always good to have ure college counselor on ure side...he shud be supporting u rather than flipping out...but yeah...dont worry

you should be okay as long as you don't have any d's or f's. The dropping % percent thing is somewhat relative because you'll be find if you dropped from 100 to 91 but not fine if you dropped from 80 to 71. I doubt they would rescind your admission though, the worst would be that they would send you a letter asking you to explain your drop in grades.
