Class of 2010

Hey everyone!

I thought I'd start a thread for the candidates of the Class of 2010 so everyone could become acquainted and talk about admissions, the academy, etc. I know the admissions process is complicated and many of us are going through it now. Hopefully we can help each other where needed.
To all the parents, current mids, alumni, and other posters- please contribute whenever you feel the need, I enjoy the stories I've heard on here and I usually learn something new on the threads. :-)
I know some candidates from summer seminar, but ill introduce myself anyways--- my name is Alli and Im from Hampton, NH. The USNA is def. my top choice/ultimate goal for college. Where are all the rest of the candidates from?

I'm from GA. USNA is my first choice school. GA Tech is my "safety school." I want to major in mechanical engineering. Marines for me. :D

hoorah! Marines is the way to go! I am looking into systems engineering for a major.

I am from NC and a transfer student. I think I could spend 4 more years if it meant going to the academy. I'm in ROTC at my present school. Don't want to sound like an ass and I know the difficulty, but I'm looking at SEALs or SpecWar in general, also at Marine FR, but since I have 20/20 I wouldn't be opposed to being a pilot. I'm just so jacked right now. Oh yeah, Poly Sci/ Sociology Major now (Used to be MechE) cause I want to do something with National Defense or Homeland Security.

I hope I'll be able to get in, I got into GaTech, UMich, VATech, NC State and Penn St. from out of HS.

tuva 137 did you just finish your freshman year at a civilian college, or are you older? and why did you decide to go to USNA now? was it one of your choices when applying to college when you were in HS?

Yes, I'm about to enter my sophomore year. USNA and USMA were the first schools I looked at when deciding on schools. I didn't apply to either one for a few reasons:

I am an only child we were on the eve of a war. Because I am an only child, I need to carry on the blood lines, so I respected my parents' wishes and didn't apply.

In a previous post I talked about how I am a Division 1 caliber football player (which I presently play). Being that, I have a decent shot of making it to the bigs. Going to Navy, I have to serve active duty immediately and could not go pro and I'm not any David Robinson so the league wouldn't wait around for me. I saw a story on sportscenter on the subject.

I injured my ACL in September of my senior year of HS and would have been DoDMERB DQ'd.

During this past winter I started thinking about the service again. With guys like Eli Manning, Kellen Winslow, Terrel Owens, Randy Moss and Ricky Williams in the NFL, it just put a sour taste in my mouth. I joined the ROTC program at my school and realized that there is no other place I would rather be and it would be the only thing to make me happy.

interesting...just thought i'd ask. Your situation made me curious. ;)

Sorry about the NFL thing. After I wrote it I realized that it may make me sound pompous. I'm not an arrogant guy, I was just trying to say that if I worked at it, I have the physical ability to make to the bigs.

I just moved from Alexandria, VA and now live in Dallas, TX. USNA is my first choice. I want to be a naval aviator and major in systems engineering. For anyone else who was there, I was at the first summer seminar.

Yeah, I was at the first summer seminar too. (A21) Where were you?

USNA is def my first choice my safety schools are UW-Madison or George Washington...yea NASS first session A41

by the way does anyone know if you are allowed to have quotes in your personal statement?

there is nothing to stop you from using "quotes" except to say that with a 500 word limit, why not consider making your voice heard for all of them?

thank you navy2010, I'm working on my personal statement now and I think it's going pretty well have you started yours yet?

i was bravo 3-4

Wisconsinavy2010....actually, it was my son's from last year....but 500 words keeps you focused and succient, which is a good thing when you consider the number of essays the admissions board must read....
bestof luck!

navy2010- thanks I finally finished mine and its 489 words, having been edited but I'm sure that I can go back through and make it 500, I feel that mine is unique enough to where they are going to remember it and know that USNA is the place for me.

wisconsinavy2010: good for you that you can check off another "item accomphished!" with 11 more words at your disposal: I am hardly the authority on this, but since they asked (recommended, requested, etc)....500 of them, why not use every last one of them and make each count to let them see "you!" (if its just "filler" or "fluff" then stick with the 489...the Navy needs frugle officers too, and its always a sign of good planning to have some reserves!!!)
best of luck!

navy2010- I ended up going back and having 500 words exactly, it took me awhile to edit the whole thing but I have now sent it in and it's a great feeling to know that that's one less thing that I have to do...now for more paperwork

Things have started to move quickly for my son all of a sudden. The DODMERB sent and scheduled him for next week and his BGO called yesterday and said that the Academy called him and wanted the interview done by the end of this week-Saturday morning. The ROTC sent application to Florida. My son said that it must just mean "Hurry up and wait".

I finally got my DoDMERB forms in the mail! I scheduled my exams immediately. I like the online application process. It makes my forms look tidy, and it's quick. Well, this is a huge relief (but the battle has just begun).

I have been looking into West Point (gasp) for the past few weeks. My main goal is the Marines, so you can see the reason for the Naval Academy (or is it possible to cross-commission to the Marines?). In my eyes the summers at USMA look more challenging (?), more like military-preparation, more...hardcore. I know USNA is challenging too, but it looks like USMA would be the better route (training-wise) if I wanted to go into the Marines because the training looks more difficult. Does anyone have deeper insight on this than I do?
