Class of 2011: Last Minute Questions?

If you have any last minute questions on any aspect of the Academy (not limited to plebe summer or plebe year), feel free to post them here. Try not to get very detailed with plebe summer questions because part of the plebe summer experience is being suprised!

Is this just for mids, or may parents ask, also?

Either, but the intent is to answer candidate questions.

how important is it to be in top physical shape prior to IDAY? honestly--i've been spending my last few days enjoying myself...working out at a somewhat minimum.

Being physically fit is important!

You do not want to be that person who drops out on runs. Additionally, you will have a physical exam in the first few days of plebe summer to determine your fitness level!

Furthermore, some physical activities (other than PEP) require strength and you might be able to complete these activities with ease if you are in shape.

One last note, it is NOT a bad thing if you start decreasing the amount and intensity of your workouts after this coming weekend. In fact, you probably should in order to let your body rest some. PEP, at the minimum, will keep you in shape.

If you have been working out consistently (over 4-5 weeks), you are probably in decent enough shape!

QUESTION: since everyone gets a lengthy 30 second shower, and shaving is probably going to be at a minimum, should girls opt to get their legs waxed before I-Day so that they don't have to worry about shaving every day?

Thanks!

Does one bring ID , Cash and Debit Card and/or the entire wallet on I-Day? or will those be locked away in nevernever land for the summer?

or mail those things with first Care Pkg?

Lola plans to wear running shoes, shorts, t-shirt and her dreaded eyeglasses on I-day and bring a calculator, toothbrush, prescription and pills, copies of paperwork (and wallet?) Is there anything else that definitely should be brought with her?

My last year Plebe had a very small wallet in her pocket that kept her ID and one debit card and once she got her military ID during Plebe Summer that went into it to. She only used her debit card if I recall during the baseball trip which comes toward the end of Plebe summer, but she isn't much of a spender. She was able to keep the wallet through I-Day in her pocket and then keep it in her desk drawer. Your Plebe will need and want their ID , meaning their civilian driver's license or the like with them, not mailed later. So your daughter can have some small wallet to put this in with her on I-day no problem

Do we get issue those eyeglasses on I-Day or prior to I-Day?,

How much money can we bring?

Can u bring gears that you think u might need when the school year has started but are not listed on the sea bag list?

Thanks

Sorry for confusion: The eyeglasses I was referring to for Lola are her regular eyeglasses that she currently owns that she never wears.. as she wears contacts.. but because contacts are disallowed for Plebe Summer, she will be wearing her current eyeglasses which will then be replaced by the even more lovely BCBGs. The BCBGs are given on I-Day. :)

A gentle reminder...it's probably a good idea NOT to wear anything associated with Navy...some Cadre can get touchy about that....

Anything you bring on I-Day that is not essential to plebe summer you won't be able to keep. You will literally be given everything you need down to your toiletries and underwear and eyeglasses- so don't worry about forgetting anything. I had my parents mail me a debit card, or just some cash during the summer to take to the baseball game as our wallets were kept. They took them away because there is no use for them over the summer and in the shuffling and everything they don't want you losing them.

Here is what I say you 'need' to bring/do on I-day:
- Copies of ALL paperwork (things do get lost, and you don't want to have to get extra immunizations, or have to redo security clearance paperwork, etc) also, leave an extra copy at home
- Wear glasses if you have them. You will not be allowed to wear contacts during plebe summer. You will be issued glasses o n I-Day and you will have to wear those, you will not be allowed to wear your civilian glasses, but wearing them to USNA eases the switch that morning
- Eat a good breakfast. You will have blood drawn and be running around all morning, literally, so make sure you have something substantial to eat. I know your nervous, but it will make things better, no matter how early you have to get up to get breakfast
- Parents: Highly recommend bringing the clear gatorade for those 20min after the swearing in. We froze a clear gatorade the night before, and it was nice to have a cold drink then. The food is up to you, most will be rushed and nervous, but it's nice to have an option.
- Most of all, remember that you worked hard to get in here and that you are prepared for this. It's going to be hard, but you'll get through just fine if you believe in yourself.

Should social security card and passport be brought?

Bring copies, don't bring the actual things.

Either bring them parents weekend, or what I recommend, mail them or bring them later in the year because there is the big move from summer rooms to acyear rooms after parent's weekend. They don't need a anything else to move at the end of the summer. If it isn't absolutely needed during plebe summer, wait to bring it.

If the cadre take the wallet away then I guess it is best not to send an ID and money? so it is better to send them later.. Confused here.. One says you get to keep your wallet, another says they take it.. Does it just depend on the company?

Most of these things will depend on your company, as each kids experience will be different. If the wallet is 'taken' it will be given back at the conclusion of plebe summer. You won't need your driver's license over the summer because you will have your military ID. I recommend just sending some cash or the debit card if you want, for the baseball game- it's easier that way for most people.

My son talked to the tennis coach during CVW and was told he could hit with the team during the summer. Will the tennis team really be there over the summer? The USNA info says to bring athletic equipment such as a tennis racquet (singular), etc. Since he (just as any junior player) can go through a set of strings every couple of times he hits, how do we get the other racquets to him for plebe summer?

In the case of a wallet (my company allowed them...though varies year to year anyways) but I would recommend holding off on sending a wallet until towards the end of July (after 1st set turnover). Since there are trips where a wallet might be useful, such as the baseball game, I would believe that most companys would allow them.

For sporting equipment, make arrangements with the coach to drop it off beforehand (pack more than one racquet in the tennis bag!). I would contact the tennis coach to ask him about strings (and who does the strining) because there is a possibility that the coach might be able to supply the services (though I am not sure on this). In regards to the team being there (this applies pretty much to most sports), if any team members are on cadre or at USNA for training, they might be coming to the plebe practices, otherwise they probably won't be around (probably on leave).

Ah. . . the last minute jitters.

Bring what you are told to bring; just that simple.

ANYTHING you can do to save time is recommended; I suppose if that means waxing your legs, then I would do it. Don't some women take "the pill" or continue taking "the pill" or somehow or the other do something about regulating their menstural cycle in this same regard.

EVERYTHING depends on your company.

If I remember correctly, you send in an eyeglass prescription ahead of time. BCGs are issued on I-day.

Drink and food at the end of the day--including a good breakfast--are highly recommended. I was processed later on in the day and didn't really get a chance to eat lunch. Parents waiting with a snack was welcom relief.

IF you've spent the last few days enjoying yourself; I say, more power to you. Not much you can do at this point to substantially improve. But, certainly, you should be in the best shape you can be.

The first package you send try and send contacts. I had a tough squad leader and he didn't care about contacts just because BCG's cut my face. You may have them taken away until the end but you may not. It's worth it to get them and whenever you get 10 seconds you can pop them in and save just a little part of your dignity.
