Class of 2011 Notification Timeline

Some corporate employers may have their own policies for applying for a corporate NM scholarship for an employee’s child. Employees would probably have to find out those policies through the corporate HR office.

It seems that most corporate NM scholarships go to children of employees. Some apparently go to NMFs who are not children of employees but perhaps have an interest in that industry. There would be nothing additional that a student would have to do to apply for such a scholarship.

Haven’t heard anything on corporate scholarship yet, but I dug out my D’s letter from 3 years ago, and it was dated March 19 (with a reply deadline of March 26!), so hopefully something will be coming soon.

To answer momofsongbird’s question, it’s not even necessary to be NMF for the special corporate scholarships - they seem to go down the list of high scorers until the money runs out.

It depends. There are three major reasons for why corporate scholarships are given
[ol]
[li]Corporations benefit to employees, by rewarding their children for academic performance[/li]e.g.
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.–Every Finalist who is the child of an employee of the corporation or a subsidiary will be offered an award

or
GEICO Philanthropic Foundation–3 awards for Finalists who are children of associates of GEICO Corporation and its subsidiaries.

[li]Corporations and non profits to encourage students in a particular field[/li]e.g.
Chevron Corporation–10 awards—8 awards for Finalists who are children of employees of the corporation and its affiliated companies; 2 awards for other Finalists planning to major in geological and earth sciences/geosciences, geological/geophysical, or petroleum
engineering.

or

*

CACI International Inc–5 awards—3 awards for children of employees of the company and its subsidiaries; 2 awards for Finalists who are planning to major in
certain technological and mathematical fields.
*
[li]Students who live in a particular area[/li]e.g.
Glenn and Ruth Mengle Foundation–Up to 4 awards for Finalists from three Pennsylvania counties— Clearfield, Elk, and Jefferson

or

Omron Foundation, Inc.–5 awards for Finalists with preference (1st) for those who are children of employees of Omron; (2nd) for those from Illinois or Michigan intending to major in electrical engineering, science, or mathematics.

or
PPG Industries Foundation–68 awards—40 awards for children of employees of PPG Industries, Inc. and its subsidiaries; 28 awards for residents of communities where PPG has operations.
[/ol]

How do you apply?
Some corporations need you to apply through their HR Department (Boeing being an example), others will get your information from the NMF form that student fills out. So you need to have filled out the NMF form correctly, and you do not have to do anything else. For example if you live in Illinois and was interested in EE, you should have filled that out correctly, else you may not be considered for the Omron scholarship.

These awards may have other conditions or the number may be limited.

DS just got a letter telling him he’s been selected for corporate scholarship, and saying that it is available to him at any qualifying institution. This was a complete surprise (although a nice one!), since neither of us works for a corporation that offers scholarships, we don’t live in a geographical area that has identified sponsors, and DS didn’t fill out anything other than the standard packet that NMSC sent him. The offer date was March 23rd, and the reply deadline is April 4th.

What a great way to start the weekend!

Has anyone else received letters about corporate sponsored schoalrships? If so, any company? Still waiting to hear…wondering if there is still hope to get a letter.

The timeline says:
Mar 24 NMSC mails offers of National Merit $2500 Scholarships
Has anyone heard about these yet?

Son got notified by mail today - he won an NM $2,500 scholarship!

I just got a letter too!!

No letter yet…how long do they keep sending them?

Son received a NMF scholarship letter on 3/26, dated 3/24 for $2500.

Thanks, Oceanview2, perhaps my mail is slow…I hope. I really need the money. ;)

I just got my $2,500 NM scholarship!

S brought home a letter from school offering the $2500!

If I do decide to go to Vandy though, I hope I can somehow decline this $2,500 award and opt for Vandy’s $2,000 per year NM award… or maybe I can get both! ah! I don’t know.

edit: I should’ve just looked it up first

so it looks like they will supply an extra $5,500, for a total of $8k

^I think you can do both…congrats on Vanderbilt!!! I heard this year was REALLY tough-like, Ivy League tough!

edit: That’s really good! Vanderbilt is very good with FA I hear.

Keelota,

I read that quote as Vandy supplementing any National Merit offer less than $2000 to bring it to $2000. My guess is that Vandy will allow the $2500 from National Merit the first year AND will likely then provide $2000 per year afterwards. Congrats.

Got mine in the mail today! Congrats to all!

D got hers today. The letter says “As indicated in your offer, the scholarship will not be affected by any other monetary awards you receive.” Does that mean she can get a tuition scholarship and the $2500? I thought there was a limit? Also she only has until 4-7 to reply with her final choice school? We have a visit day on 4-8 am I missing something?

^mommidwest – you have to reply by 4/7. Once you finalize your choice, you will send the college info on the form that comes with the notification letter. So, no, you don’t have to decide on a school until you’re ready. They don’t say when, just as soon as you finalize your college plan.

wow…i got my NMSC $2500 today in the mail…
still in shock because my PSAT score was on the cutoff for my state…
they really do look beyond the subjective…
