I hate subject tests. I’m not going to take anymore unless it is absolutely necessary.

puggly i have to take a math & science (physics). im gonna take the math which is more of pre calc than geometry.

spelman doesn’t require any, i don’t want to take any because that’s where i wanna only apply to lol

Are they really that important? I’ve only taken AP Physics C Mech for a physics class, so I don’t think I’d be prepared for Physics. I could take Math II, but I would rather not…

I’ve been trying to stay away from posting my profile until SAT scores from my first time come back, but this is too exciting. I’ve been looking at ivy leagues, state schools (VA), and liberal arts schools. So far, I’ve got harvard, princeton, amherst college, rutgers, william and mary, UC berkeley, st. johns (md), kenyon. I think amherst is the perfect match for me, and it is very selective but I know I belong and feel can get in there. Harvard is my reach. I can’t really get excited for the other schools on my list… I don’t really know what my safety would be. I feel like I could get into W&M no problem. Many kids from my school with worse grades and less extracurriculars have gotten in, so…

My GPA after 10th grade: 4.313… my gpa after end of 1st semester, junior year: 4.391… unweighted is still 4.0… nothing less than an A (not even A-)

Classes (not including mandatory PE which still factors into GPA)

8th: Latin I, Algebra I HN
9th: Latin II, Geometry HN, PreAP World Civ (HN), PreAP Eng 9 (HN), Biology I HN, Journalism 1
10th: Latin III, Algebra II HN, AP World History, PreAP Eng 10, Chemistry I HN, Journalism 2
11th: Latin IV, Precalc/Trig HN, AP US History, AP Eng Lang/Comp, Physics I HN, Journalism 3, AP Psych
12th (planned): AP Latin Vergil, AP Calculus BC, AP Comparative Gov, AP Lit/Comp, AP Physics C (Mech), AP European History, Journalism 4. (After much debate, I decide to challenge myself w/ physics/bc instead of ap enviro/calc ab, even if it means probably getting less than A’s in those classes)

I hope to at least continue my A streak this year, but physics is pretty tough for me, since I have no friends in that class and drift off.

Extracurriculars (I know they’re really varied, but I’m not going to ever list them all, just the ones that pertain to my classical/teaching/writing interests): JV Math team, V math team, Model UN, SAGA (students against global abuse), Excel Tutoring, Latin Club, Latin Honor Society, English Honor Society, National Honor Society, Certamen (Latin quiz bowl) team, student newspaper, began my own greek-teaching business during study hall periods at school, do tae kwon do, did gymnastics recreationally

leadership: president of latin club/latin honor society, public relations officer of model un, founder/teacher of my greek club, news editor for paper (and my teacher has told me I’m a shoo-in for editor in chief), captain of certamen team, will re-run for VP of english honor society after losing this year, and will probably run for a position in NHS. Strangely, all these clubs and activites aren’t as time-consuming as you’d think.

extras: I’m a lower middle class hispanic guy. parents didnt attend college, sister was dropout who got ged and was first to attend college. not a resident/citizen. financial aid very important, since not being a resident means I dont qualify for most scholarships

awards: LOTS of latin awards. too many to list. lots of tae kwon do first place finishes at local tournaments.

service: teaching greek, various other tutoring commitments through clubs and individually. Would like to do something more large scale this summer.

SAT: Expect over 2000/2100 this first time after checking all my answers on here. Aiming to surpass 2250 eventually while fixing the disparity between my math and english sections (getting math to 700+, as close to 800 for the other two.) 203 on psat, but didnt have a calculator (LOL).

interests: classics (latin/greek), russian lit/lang, journalism, possibly physics/engineering depending on how next year goes.
Career: teacher/writer/engineer

about me: I’m not always outgoing, but I’m very assertive and competitive. I still am very humble no matter how well I do in school and know I can make an emotional connection in my interview and especially in my essay.

recommendations: latin 2/3 teacher, ap lit (I’ve had her before) or lang teacher…

Biggest flaw: too varied selection of clubs, no standout community service, too many leadership positions (is this a minus), possibly not going that far above 2100 on sat, senior grades dropping from all a’s (although if you look at my course selection, you’d think they’d have some empathy).

I would love to go to amherst, all I hate are the drab surroundings and stiff architechture of the campus. Harvard is a reach but I’d probably end up going there if I got in, although I’m not sure it lets you double/triple major, which I’m pretty set on doing. Sorry for rambling!

interficio, another latin fellow! and good stats, makin people look bad haha. and i wish they’d have empathy, but they don’t because there will always be someone who will have better grades =/

puggly they’re important if the school says they are. for spelman i might send mine in just in case, as kind of an “i did more than i had to because i’m really interested” or maybe that would be bad. i dont think im prepared for any =/

haha thanks. I love latin!!! But I mean, I’d like to think an A- in AP Physics/Calc BC would mean more to them than A in AP Enviro/Calc AB, but who knows. I’ll definitely talk to my teacher. And the AB/BC classes are weird. First quarter, AB had 3 A’s in the whole class, BC had none. 2nd quarter it’s the opposite…

^^Yeah… I don’t think Hamilton places much emphasis on standardized tests, so I should be good. :)

i have the highest grade in my calc class (even higher than the val. and it’s funny because all my grades are higher than his, but since he transferred from a prestigious christian school, he took APs since freshman year, not fair=/)
i had a 98, then i took a test & got an 80 & it brought my grade to a 92 RIGHT before the marking period closed im determined to get it again.

what physics do you have? is it C or B? idk the difference lol. my school has the NON calc based one

puggly, i wish NO schools cared about standardized tests. its not fair =/ they should be eliminated

I mostly like them, it’s just that some schools seem to care about them far too much.

they add too much stress. AP/IB/whatever-your-school-has tests cause way too much stress as it is, and then SATs? subject tests? it adds unnecessary competitiveness. people at my school always compare grades, and they take ONE test more serious than overall grades. i don’t think they’re effective.

Yeah… my 1830 is not sexy for MIT…

Neither is my 30. My mom doesn’t want me to take a 2nd time.

Asian male in California.

Major: Math (possibly also Physics or CS)

Top choices are MIT and Harvey Mudd. Also applying to Caltech, UChicago, Rice, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSB, plus a bunch more that I’m still in the process of choosing.

SAT: 2360 (790 CR/800 M/770 W)

AP Stats
AP Chem
APUSH

AP Music

Everything looks fine up until here.

ECs: My main “EC” is math. 99% probability of qualifying for AIME this year, at most 25% probability of qualifying for USAMO (probably much lower). I estimate somewhere between 5-8 on the AIME. Estimated 95% chance of getting a USAMTS shirt (AKA honorable mention) due to procrastinating on the second round and thus only solving three problems. Others: Piano. Watching anime/anime club. Taking linear algebra and multivariable calculus online.

Yawn.

Hopefully I get into some sort of nice sciencey program for this summer (or at least Mathcamp). I’m going to try finding some approachable math research problems, regardless of whether I get into one of those, and probably study some other fun stuff (graph theory!).

I’m really not optimistic about my chances. A conservative guess is that I will only get into the UCs, so I’ll probably end up going to UC Berkeley. Eh.

guess I’ll join in.

Female
1/2 Pacific Islander (Chamoru & Samoan), 3/8 African-American, 1/8 Native American. First two are going on my apps, possibly not the third.

Applying to USC, Vanderbilt, and some safeties. I initially wanted to apply to Stanford, but now I’m not sure anymore because of my GPA… I’ll decide in a few months.

I want to major in either biology or neuroscience, with a minor in music.

Ec’s- Not going into specifics, but here goes:
I’m president of my school’s Environmental Club, president of our marine biology club, and now vice-president of Tri-M Music Honor Society.
I’m first chair bassoon, contrabass clarinet and tenor saxophone in 9 different bands and orchestras around the city and in the state, including All-State, All-Region, Youth Orchestra, and church orchestras.
I have 2 jobs: I teach bassoon (and in a few weeks, alto sax) lessons and I work at a frozen custard place.

…yea that’s about it.

marinebiosax you do have a lot more people in your class though (regarding your rank)
MIThopeful, my highest SAT was 1960, not cool either, but WAY above average spelman averages (that’s all i care about haha)
energize- i wanted to do usamts but i didnt have the time. don’t doubt yourself!! everybody has good stats, and lucky you, you live in cali. my mom is only letting me apply to spelman b.c i have family in GA. im from ct and thats where she wants me to stay

(sighs) Just a heads up. My profile sucks.

applebeam- you have an advantage over a lot of kids (like me) that weren’t allowed/couldn’t take APs until jr year. i wish someone would have got me in the spirit in eighth grade, i wouldn’t have taken stupid classes like art and foods

^Thanks, CPUscientist3000. I’m just hoping that I can get my GPA up to a 3.4-3.5 range and my SATs around 2200s.

no prob!
and yeah i wanna break 2100 for my SATs, i’m 160 points away =X

cpu… we have physics C: mechanics, which i believe is tougher than B (the class that kids at my school had to take online this year due to lack of ap physics interest after a horrible teacher taught it). So we do have calculus involved, but I don’t think it’s a huge jump from precalc/physics HN.

forgot to add that I’ve taken two sat II’s, latin 750, world history 780… I dont know if I should get into history as well… i’d major in every subject if I could! as for sat II’s will probably retake latin to try for 800 (it’s my best subject so I know I can do better than the 750 I got, especially since I just randomly chose to take it after finishing my world sat II since you can choose to take extra tests)… I’ll also take math II and ap us… after senior year for possible credits i’ll probably take euro/lit/physics
