Hey guys…so I’m a senior (Class of 2011!) and I participated in the Rockefeller University Summer High School Science Outreach Program last summer. I just wanted to recommend this program to all of you. Although it may not be as prestigious as RSI or SSP, it is still a very rigorous environment and I had a great research experience there. It was my first time researching ever, and I learned so much. My mentor, lab, and friends from the program were amazing.

Rockefeller U is in NYC and it’s not a residential/dorming program, so you’ll have to find your own dorm if you are not a local (I wasn’t). But it was definitely worth it. I’m so glad I heard about it and applied. I applied to about seven programs and only got into Rockefeller - of course, now I’m glad I went to Rockefeller because it was one of the best times of my life.

I think the deadline is Jan. 15 (check the website), so it’s coming up really quickly. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! Good luck with all your summer program apps!

Am I the only person on CC applying to a single summer program? God, it was so awkward asking my counselor to fill in that one report and asking my teacher for one LOR, I’d hate to do it multiple times. My school is so academically uncompetitive that they were like ‘honestly, ***?!’ when I brought it up. They couldn’t get their heads around the fact that someone actually wanted to go learn ish over the summer.

so far on my list are the Rockefeller Outreach Program and an internship at Coriell Institute in camden nj. Basically I’m looking for anything that doesn’t cost like $3000 and is commutable from where I live (nj).

right now im so in love with rockefeller and i want to go so badly!!

@VirologyNerd- do you think the people in charge of admissions focus more on the transcript or the personal statement/article response/recs. i have challenging courses and stuff but my current gpa is definitely not a 4. will working really hard on the writing aspect give me a better chance at getting accepted? also, what topic did you research? im curious thanks!

You’re going to have to either rent an apartment (Extremely, extremely expensive in New York City. If you’re from some other area in the 'burbs you will be shocked at the prices) or stay with relatives in the area for the Rockefeller Program if you aren’t local.

Also, the Harvard program and any others like it (Columbia High School Summer Program, Summer@Brown, etc.) are just money making machines

I’m going to start a more intense weight lifting program, switch up my CoD regimen, maybe fill out some college apps, maybe some comm service, and I’ll probably start running again.

Yay, Im glad to hear some people are applying to Rockefeller! Sorry it took me a while to respond.

@TJheart: Im not sure what they weigh more, sorry. But definitely do your best on the writing aspect, because that might be what pushes you over the edge. I researched soil bacteria in a chemical biology lab (this is totally giving myself away on CC haha).

@seancarpenter: I stayed at a dorm at The New School called Stuyvesant [Student Services Housing :: Residences :: Stuyvesant Park Residence](http://www.newschool.edu/studentservices/housing/subpage.aspx?id=32938)
I lived there for 7 weeks (the length of the program). My room type was “Curfew” (I had to check in by 12 midnight). The Curfew rate (ages 15-18) for 6 weeks or more is $380/person/week. I lived in a room with one other girl, and we shared a suite (including kitchen and bathroom) with two other girls, who were in another room. My floor was co-ed.
The only weird thing about this dorm is that it’s basically all performing arts students. There was no one else doing math/science research. Everyone was doing musical theater or visual art. As a result, I felt a little left out and I didn’t really fit in with the people in my dorm. To make it worse, everyone on my floor was in the same program. I don’t know if this kind of stuff bothers you, but it was not great for me. However, I loved everyone I met at Rockefeller, and I made some great friends.
My parents also checked out dorms at NYU, but they didn’t go inside. All they said was that the building conditions looked a little older and more worn.
Regarding finances, you can apply for a scholarship for airplane fees if you’re traveling to NYC and back. But the program won’t pay for your dorming since it’s not a residential program.

Class of 2011: I suggest that you guys look into HSHSP. I attended last year and it was awesome. You can get financial aid also. There’s around 20 spots so pretty competitive. It’s legit check it out :)
