BUBound does have a point. This has been a "my school is better then your school" thing. I feel like I am responsibly for that. Truth of a matter is BU and PSU are both great schools. I just didn't agree with a statement that was being made. Im sorry for any frustration I have caused.

ok good now thats settled...back to what the forum is about....the class of 2013 (we have it next)

Has anyone started to write their college admissions essay?

When do we have to start writing it?

I did mine at the end of December.

lol!! SLACKER

I am not sure if there is a right or wrong answer to that question. I was reading somewhere where they suggest that you do it during the summer or early fall. Because it should be perfect. Or if you are like me and writing three to prevent changing your mind.... then I don't know. But you know yourself better than anyone so!

I started slaving over my essays around two months ago (I'm always incredibly anxious), and everything I wrote was total crap.

Luckily, my old AP Language teacher cautioned our class to save every essay we wrote in her class, so I'm semi-recycling an essay I wrote my junior year. I'm making some alterations to it (my old AP Lang and AP Lit teachers have agreed to help me edit), but overall it was definitely my best work and fits the common app topic quite well.

I will, however, write one or two more before the end of the summer, just in case they come out better/I change my mind.

Wow. Boston University seems to be a very popular choice. It's on my list too. >.> Good luck to everyone. :)

yeah, i also told myself that i was going to work on my college essays over the summer but then i ended up writing them at the last minute just like particleman. i actually changed my major at BU around february and i rewrote the supplement essay lol. i'm surprised they accepted me but thank god they did because i'm going there this fall :]

jec7483, i'd be careful not to rely so much on US News rankings. It's not mostly based off of academics. A lot has to do with your endowment relative to school size too, which is not directly correlated to quality of education, but more so of research. An example is how BU's medical school dropped quite a few rankings after their NIH research grant to build the new bioterrorism building winded down. You can see it's jump by tracing back previous rankings which is when the NIH funding started coming in.

US News Rankings =/= quality of education. You can probably see a better correlation with research opportunities since the big name research universities are the ones drawing in the most funding and have a higher ranking. State schools are an exceptional way of taking advantage of quality academics while saving $40k a year over just going to a school based on their name and US News Rankings.
