I got a 223 in Florida. Judging by it’s previous cutoffs, that should get me in. Would it, this year?

215 in Maine really hoping there’s no jump…

Something fishy is going on here.
if you look at the percentiles from the 2011 PSAT administration and the 2012 administration, they seem to be identical. however, the commended cutoff is 3 points higher this year. how can this be?

2011 report-http://www.bernardsboe.com/Guidance/CMFiles/Docs/PSAT%20Percentiles%20&%20Mean%20Scores%202011.pdf
Anyway, i am sitting with a 217 in Oregon and am desperately hoping that the cutoff does not go above that(it was 213 last year and 216 the year before)
@kellyrandom: you should be just fine. the highest Maine has ever been is 213, and the cutoff last year was 210. the cutoff will most likely not jump by 6 points this year, as it never has in any state before. The highest jump in any state that i have ever seen is 5 points, and it has only happened twice(Utah and Vermont for the 2010 administration)
@DatThing: yes

Oftheking, don’t be worried at all. Your score is well above the cutoff for any state.

@lonely
If you read the 2012 guide carefully, you will notice that it reports percentiles based on LAST year’s test takers, which explains why they are identical. FYI, the 99% national cutoff for the CO2014 was 211 (someone I know with a 211 told me their score report said 99%). I’m not sure if it went as low as 210 but I’m positive about 211. The jump in commended cutoff is likely explained by the larger number of people in each state scoring in the 70-74 ranges. Since the 99% percentile hasn’t moved, it seems like many people did well in one section while doing terrible in others. There will definitely be an increase in cutoffs but probably not 4-6 point increases in most states.

But of course I am still nervous and all there is left is to wait…

I got a 210 in SC. Last year it was 208, year before 211, and year before that 208 again. I’m really nervous about finding out…

Re: @lonelynerd217 -> @kellyrandom12

I agree that a 215 in Maine should be safe, for you @kellyrandom2

Regarding the big jumps year-to-year, here are the ones I know about in recent years:

Nevada – 6 point jump from the Class of 2010 to the Class of 2011 (202 → 208)

Utah – 5 point jump from the Class of 2011 to the Class of 2012 (203 → 208)
Vermont – 5 point jump from the Class of 2011 to the Class of 2012 (212 → 217)

Idaho – 4 point jump from the Class of 2008 to the Class of 2009 (204 → 208)
Rhode Island – 4 point jump from the Class of 2009 to the Class of 2010 (213 → 217)
Montana – 4 point jump from the Class of 2010 to the Class of 2011 (204 → 208)
New Mexico – 4 point jump from the Class of 2011 to the Class of 2012 (206 → 210)
Kentucky – 4 point jump from the Class of 2011 to the Class of 2012 (208 → 212)
Arizona – 4 point jump from the Class of 2011 to the Class of 2012 (209 → 213)
Florida – 4 point jump from the Class of 2011 to the Class of 2012 (210 → 214)
Texas – 4 point jump from the Class of 2011 to the Class of 2012 (215 → 219)

Every state but Louisiana (who stayed even at 209) dropped at least one point between the Class of 2012 and Class of 2013. Many people (including me) are expecting a rise this year to levels similar to the Class of 2012. Good luck everyone!

**Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2014/B

Because National Merit doesn’t post a list of cutoff scores by state, people on this site have traditionally shared data here on CC. NMSC usually notifies in late August and news should be coming soon. Because high schools are highly idiosyncratic about contacting their student semi-finalists, it would be great if everyone would update the score under their state to compile a list for the individuals who won’t know about their status for several more weeks.

You can feel free to edit the list yourself. Or simply post your information and rely on others to edit it in.

If you have been notified that you are NMSF, post your score (and your state) if it is lower than the score already posted for your state. It will then become the lowest know qualifying score and be indicated as “<=”.

If you have reliable knowledge of what the qualifying score for your state is (try asking whoever notifies you!), post it here, too. It will become the definitive cut-off score for your state indicated by “=”.

Finally, if you know that you did not qualify and had a reasonably high score, it can also be useful to post your score as an example of the highest non-qualifying score. This can be indicated by “>=”

Please note: Be conscientious as you post scores on this thread–it would be crushing to be led to believe you have made the cutoff by a post but actually haven’t. But everyone should be tolerant of mistakes, too. This is an unofficial source of information derived from a collaborative process and is not, therefore, guaranteed.

See the stickied FAQ thread in this forum for links to lists of previous scores.

After the press-release date in mid-September, qualifying scores will be available by phone from the NMSC. Here is the number to call–the receptionist will give you one “qualifying score” when asked.

yeah, i know the formatting is terrible, but just try to match the cutoff with the year at the top or bottom of the list. if there is a question mark in the list by your state, that means that the cutoff for 2007 could not be found
