***Class of 2014 NMSF Qualifying scores***

Qualified with a 223 in Connecticut! Guidance counselor gave me the form and everything. Unsure of the cutoff.

Although we may well tie the record today, here is the link to the now infamous 224 cutoff in MA for the 2007 NMSF competition (Oct 2005 PSAT)…

CT is heard from!

I’m sure Jazzed is Jazzed :D

I’m going to wait on CA, MA & DC for now…

After the press-release date in mid-September, qualifying scores will be available by phone from the NMSC. Here is the number to call–the receptionist will give you one “qualifying score” when asked.

If you have been notified that you are NMSF, post your score (and your state) if it is lower than the score already posted for your state. It will then become the lowest known qualifying score and be indicated as “<=”.

If you have reliable knowledge of what the qualifying score for your state is (try asking whoever notifies you!), post it here, too. It will become the definitive cut-off score for your state indicated by “=”.

Finally, if you know that you did not qualify and had a reasonably high score, it can also be useful to post your score as an example of the highest non-qualifying score. This can be indicated by “>=”

Please note: Be conscientious as you post scores on this thread–it would be crushing to be led to believe you have made the cutoff by a post but actually haven’t.
Was told by GC that school has info but was told not to distribute it until the public release date. Seems many schools are following this instruction.

From MD. Just communicated this afternoon with my son’s GC who was under the impression that students and families heard from NMSC directly about commended and semifinalist status. He assumed that NMSC has sent some sort of letter in April about commended status. Well, we got nothing. I’'ve told him that he and the school were our only source of information on any national merit scholar status this year. He says the school’s letter probably in the principal’s office but it has not “trickled” down to him yet.

I wonder how many schools sit on this information because they think they have no need to tell anyone because NMSC does the work for them. The principal at my son’s school may be sitting on the school letter just waiting for students or parents to call with news of their mysterious “letters” that they got this week from NMSC. I’m surprised about how little my son’s private Catholic school appears to care about this process.

This magical mystery tour is exaperating.

I think part of the delay is chaos from the beginning of the school year. Our school district (in NJ) started school on Wednesday (more assemblies than classes) then had off yesterday for holiday and back in school today. So with all the chaos of the start of the school year may have them holding the news until things settle down. Of course they don’t know we have been anxiously waiting the news and skulking this message board for days…

Yes, I think most of the New England schools just started this week. Hope to hear some news on Monday!

Vt<=226! :)

VT cutoff is 217. Friend made it with 217, my 216 did not make it

Thanks for the update, passport, and sorry to hear that you just missed it!

Hi everyone! So I’m from CT, and I guess since I got a 224, I made the cutoff. However, my school is not well run at all and so likely with processing the mail and such I won’t be informed by them for a while; hence I won’t get any of the forms or materials for a while. Do you mind telling me the essay prompt if you have it?

Not sure if someone has posted this but regarding instructions to “keep it quiet”, I do believe NMSC, being a private entity does indeed consider the cutoffs “proprietary” information until they release it first. I’ve been left with the impression that their PR date is next week mid-week. In the meantime, I know individuals who made the cutoff were being told individually and in private at our high school this week. Just the cutoff wasn’t being publicized. Hence this game we all play.

OhDad3, I’m not so sure. Unless, NMSC has confidentiality agreements with every high school in the country, the information they released to thousands of schools across the country is no longer “proprietary” once it is mailed. If not, every principal or GC that running his or her mouth this week is at risk of getting sued.

The better explanation is that the NMSC instructions in the school letters are vague and many schools do not have an orderly way of informing the few students this affects. Those with agressive guidance programs seem to push the information out faster. Those that don’t have any number of reasons not to do so - including " I thought this stuff was confidential;" or, in my case, “I thought you were hearing from NMSC directly.”

My sense is that, 5 years from now, you’ll see a uniform announcement about cutoffs posted by NMSC and advance notice to the schools will be cut out entirely.

But you can draw your own conclusions. This time last year I was totally ignorant about this process and, like Algernon, I will return to that state in 12-months hence.

My impression is that it is the NAMES of the semifinalists that is confidential until the press release date. NMSC never directly releases the cutoffs, as far as I know.

3 years ago my son was one of two semifinalists at his HS. After learning of his temporarily confidential semifinalist status, he went one morning to ask his 10th grade English teacher to review his essay, and found his good friend there too. They had a conversation along the lines of: “Is the reason you’re here a secret?” “yup” “me too, congratulations!” “thanks, congratulations to you too!”

They’ve been doing their convoluted thing for many years now. I have no reason to believe they’ll change that in the coming years, though it would be nice (since I have one more kid to get through this process).

I believe the only instructions the schools have is not to release anything to the public by making announcements. Many schools have gone through the process of taking pictures and writing up the news paper stories to be announced on the day NMSC permits them to in order to simultaneously make the announcements.

Many schools do pull the students together to let them know ahead of the actual announcement date although some don’t know how to read the instructions and think they can’t even tell the students.

The scores came out in December. Most students know they are making it or not making it. The only ones who are stuck not knowing are those in that bandwidth of about 6-7 points in each State. So who is NMSC kidding with all the secrecy?

It would be SO nice if NMSC would just announce cutoffs/semifinalists in December when the scores come out. Drawing it out like this is just torture for students on the cusp. It would be so helpful for Juniors doing college visits and making their lists in the spring to just know what their status would be.
