***Class of 2014 NMSF Qualifying scores***

My son qualified as a semifinalist with a 215 in Nebraska.

To the person who scored a 221 in Virginia and did not make it:
Do you attend a boarding school? I think that they have different cutoffs from other schools.
Also, is the school that you attend located in Virginia(not Washington DC or Maryland)?
It seems crazy that a big state like Virginia would jump 5 or more points while smaller states jump by 2-4 points each.

Another State heard from: NE

I’m going to wait on CA, MA & DC for now…

Please use this template that explains the symbols below for each state

See the stickied FAQ thread in this forum for links to lists of previous scores.

After the press-release date in mid-September, qualifying scores will be available by phone from the NMSC. Here is the number to call–the receptionist will give you one “qualifying score” when asked.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation
1560 Sherman Avenue
Suite 200
Evanston, Illinois 60201-4897
Main Telephone: (847) 866-5100
Main Fax: (847) 866-5113

You can feel free to edit the list yourself. Or simply post your information and rely on others to edit it in.

If you have been notified that you are NMSF, post your score (and your state) if it is lower than the score already posted for your state. It will then become the lowest known qualifying score and be indicated as “<=”.

If you have reliable knowledge of what the qualifying score for your state is (try asking whoever notifies you!), post it here, too. It will become the definitive cut-off score for your state indicated by “=”.

Finally, if you know that you did not qualify and had a reasonably high score, it can also be useful to post your score as an example of the highest non-qualifying score. This can be indicated by “>=”

Please note: Be conscientious as you post scores on this thread–it would be crushing to be led to believe you have made the cutoff by a post but actually haven’t. But everyone should be tolerant of mistakes, too. This is an unofficial source of information derived from a collaborative process and is not, therefore, guaranteed.

@challengefan:
do you know what the cutoff was?

Oh no, I have a 220 in CT haha so nervous! I probably missed it by 1 point, because the scores have a +3 trend…

I can’t seem to find this in the thread but I thought I read it… Does anyone know the highest jump ever? Last year’s cutoff for maine was 210. I have a 215 so I think I’ll be okay. But has any state had a 5 or 6 point jump before?

kelly, 5 to 6 point jumps are rare. I think they have happened before but am not sure, in most years, you’d be fine that high above last year’s cutoff but who knows with this year. there is a chart somewhere on this thread that shows scores since 1999 for each state so that chart would give you a better idea on your state’s historical data and how much your state tends to fluctuate year by year.

[post=16267463]year-to-year jumps[/post]

@kellyrandom12: Take a look at the post above and the subsequent posts in this thread for an idea of the year-to-year cutoff score differentials. Good luck!

I have not yet recieved any news from my principal.
Is this because my mail is just slow or did my state’s cutoff actually jump by 5 points?
I know the highest cutoff in my state is 218(post 1066), but i’m 1 point below that.

lonelynerd217, Don’t panic! Our school didn’t notify of Commended status and hasn’t told anyone of their NMSF status either…think some schools just wait until the make-public date to proceed.

Help. anyone know what is for MA . Thanks

Amyone know MA citoff? I so nervous with 224. Thanks

Narrowing Missouri – I can confirm that the MO cutoff is less than or equal to 214 (per a friend at another school who was notified by his principal that he qualified)

Any official words for CA yet anyone?

Just as I said before, my daughter is a semifinalist in CA with a 223. She was the only one at her school and she didn’t know of any other kids/scores. The principal did tell me that in our town with 4 high schools there were 5 semifinalists but he didn’t tell me their scores.

@lonelynerd

Sorry, I have no idea what the cutoff is! I don’t think anyone else at my school got above a 200, so that’s no help
