***Class of 2014 NMSF Qualifying scores***

They posted it on my local news 10 hours ago but retracted by now. I can only read the title saying over 100 NMSF in my county. It was actually first posted 2 days ago. I did a google search and see my D’s name on the search result of a dead link. LOL.

Letters were handed out at D’s school today, and the GC said they just got them. We knew D would make it based on her score but it was nice to see the confirmation. Last year we had only one NMSF but D said her GC had several letters in the stack. FYI we are in IL.

Mdcmom I got a call at 4:00 from my daughters guidance counselor informing that she is a semifinalist. She had a 222, so I bet the 219 is the correct cutoff for NY. The guidance counselor reminded me that this was private family information until tomorrow so I have a gut feeling they sat on the letter for a week. My nerves are a wreck, but I am so relieved. I was worried that with the other northeastern states being so high, 219 seemed too good to be true. I still wonder how fair test got the info but it sounds like it is reliable even though national merit corp wouldn’t verify that it was accurate. My daughter was the only semifinalist at the school and maybe the first in its history. I will keep my fingers crossed for you, but I don’t think you have to worry.

Hoping someone can answer this question: If you make NM semifinalist and need an SAT score “comparable” to your PSAT score, what is really considered “comparable”? What if your SAT score ends up being 50-60 points under your PSAT score, should you retake the SAT to try and get higher? Hope this makes sense to someone… we are new at this whole process.

answers to almost all you need to know about this process:

Could someone please explain where the “confirming score” of 1960 comes from?

DD’s PSAT score was 220+ (had a REALLY good test-taking day!), and SAT from last May was in the lower 2100s (not such a great test-taking day!). Should she take the SAT again? (She has excellent ACT scores, and will submit those with college apps, so unless she needs a higher score to advance to NMF, she doesn’t plan to retake the SAT.)

mountainhiker…The “confirming” SAT score of 1960 has historically been what NMSC needed to see as part of the NMSF to NMF package. They calculate it by taking M+CR+(10 x Writing Multiple Choice subscore). The Writing MC subscore can be found by drilling down into the “Understanding My Score” (I think that’s how it’s worded). Do not look at the number of correct questions, you need to find the MC subscore.

Given that there were several states that hit historic highs for cutoffs, it’s POSSIBLE that the confirming score MIGHT rise slightly, but your D’s 2100+ score will be more than sufficient. No need to retake it, just submit it electronically to NMSC (code #0085). If you’d like, you can call NMSC and ask them if they’ve already determined a confirming score for this year’s crop of SFs. I believe they will tell you. Congrats to your D and Good Luck!!

Thanks, Wolverine86! I’ll call NMSC tomorrow and ask them about the confirming score. I’ll post back with whatever I hear from them.

I hope they’ll announce the results tomorrow here in Florida! I’m pretty sure my son will be a semi-finalist, but I can wait for the official confirmation. I haven’t heard from the National Hispanic either.

New Yorkers…in case your school still hasn’t given out names (like ours) this link has a list at the bottom of all NMSFs in New York State.

And yes, my daughter is on the list  . Only two made it in our county, it appears; DD and a homeschooler north of us. The list is dominated by NYC and suburbs, as expected, so I definitely feel the pain of those who missed because of high cutoffs generated by more affluent areas of a state. In any case, all our kids are pretty brilliant, NMSF or no NMSF!

mdcmom: What link?

My daughter just got her letter! She had a 220, in TN. They didn’t tell her the official cutoff. I just want to say congratulations to all who made it, AND to those who didn’t make the cutoff as well. You have all worked hard. Even though this is an exciting thing, it is only one small piece in the puzzle. This score can be helpful, but defines nobody!
Thanks to all who started and have kept this thread going.

OH, dear. Try again.

Does anyone know how to find a complete list for PA semifinalists?

Does anyone know how to find a complete list for CA semifinalists?

Any list out there for Florida?

I couldn’t wait any more, I called the NMSC. One of my seniors made it yay! Congratulations to all the semifinalists. And to all the kids who are working hard, regardless of the grades.

I couldn’t find any list anywhere for Florida for this year. The cutoff score is 214. They just told me at the NMSC that letters were sent to schools on September 3rd.
