I sure wish there were data available on how many juniors this year scored lower than their sophomore scores, and how that compares to prior years. I have heard of so many here on CC as well as at my son’s school. Anyone else think there are more kids this year whose scores went down? I’m hoping that is an indicator that the scores are lower overall this year.

Barfly, my son’s score went from 219 as a Sophomore to 224 as a Junior. A few years ago my daughter’s score increased by a larger margin between Sophomore and Junior years. Hardly scientific, but my hunch is that this was a harder test to score well on than last year’s test. Won’t be long now to see if the State summary data supports this hunch.

I just checked to see if the state summaries are posted yet, and it says “temporarily unavailable”. Last year they were available on Feb. 6, a Wednesday, so perhaps if they update on Wednesdays, they will be available tomorrow.

^ Well, it’s Feb 6 and I’m up late, so I decided to check this thread & saw Barfly’s post. I believe I found the correct link to check state summaries, but I don’t find any data for Class of 2015 there…

I have no idea where to look for the summaries (tried Google but no luck). Hopefully someone here will find them and post a link! It would be really nice to know if our state went up or down.

Here is the link: <a href=“SAT Suite of Assessments – Reports | College Board”>http://research.collegeboard.org/programs/psat/data/cb-jr
It hasn’t updated yet. I’m anxiously waiting for the 2013 test statistics. My kid is on the bubble…

Power outage here, and everyone gets chatty again. Just checked, no updates posted yet. Was hoping I’d get back online and you guys would have figured it all out. I do know of a couple of local juniors whose scores went DOWN from last year, which is a bit encouraging I think. I did punch some PA numbers way back in December, but if I remember…the 75-80 data was most telling for prediction validity. I thought the 70-74 data would be useful, especially since my own kid has scores in that range, but the 75+ data trended better overall at least with PA cuts. For what that’s worth…

Looks like based on pom2015’s link, the statistics have been released for this year! Looks like an overall decrease in scores (with no change in Math). Anyone care to share what this usually means in past years in respect to the cut-off scores?

I couldn’t find state-specific data, just the national averages going down a tiny bit. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I could not find state specific data as well. But seeing that national averages have been released, I assume state data will be close to follow!

Finally!! They updated the overall statistics for 2013 test, although state statistics are not available yet. It should appear at the bottom of the current 2013 summary page. I guess they are in the middle of updating. The overall statistics are very promising-- it shows almost 1 point decrease in the total score, which means lower mean scores compared to last year. I do hope this pattern holds up in the state statistics…

Dorhawk, it seems that the national mean score and state mean score do not always travel together, at least for some states. In some cases, state mean could rise even in case the national mean drops. It happened a few times in my state and I DO hope it is not the case this year! We cannot make any educated prediction until the state summary is released.

pom2015 - That’s what I’m worried about, especially coming from a state with a very high cutoff… I guess we still have to wait and see.

You’re absolutely right pom2015! I hope that Texas (where I’m located) follows this trend. We had an all-time high of 219 last year for the cut-off score and in past years it is usually met with a “correction”. I hope that it stays true for us this year around as well! May I ask what states you all are located in?

As a mom hoping 206 will be commended, this is good news. If the top dropped along with the average, which may not be so.

Thanks for the link! I have this data compiled for PA over the years, and for the same total years back, our cut was one point lower than last year. So that’s my guess for PA (216). The breakdown has similarities to other years, that were also lower (214/215). PA’s only other 217 (our max, and our last year’s cut) year (at least in the past 10 years) had a considerably higher total for all three means.

The data still confuses me, as many other prior years had similar totals to the 217 year (test of 2005, a peak for many states), but with lower cuts. PA’s totals have dropped by a good 5 points in recent years, including last year’s also record high.

My ramblings are PA specific and my PA buddies are welcome to stop by for coffee for further analysis, LOL! I do think the minor drops overall are good news for the big wait. Hopefully state specific data is soon to follow, as comparing state specific data to the individual means and totals is more telling.

Checking in here from KS. My DS did not score as high as most of the DCs w/parents on this thread, but he scored high enough that he’s basically on the bubble for our state. I’m happy to see national scores trending down, and DS has certainly seen lower scores among his classmates than in years past at his HS, but we would need a 3 point drop in KS for DS to make the cut. For those experienced posters, do we expect to see state summaries today? I might have to stare at my laptop all night, instead of watching the Olympic opening ceremonies!

The more I like at my PA data, the less sense it makes. Sadly for the wait, the best predictor seems to be the score that marks the start of the 99+ range, which won’t be out until we already know, .

I don’t see the state summaries up yet. Thinking maybe I’ll look at the 2012 summaries to see what we might expect when 2013 is posted. Haven’t poked around the CB PSAT web site yet…but I really have no idea what I’m doing, anyway.

On the Parents of HS Class of 2015 thread, there was a post indicating that state summaries would not be available until September 2014. Isn’t that different than in years past? Is anyone else aware of this? Or perhaps I was just misunderstanding that state summaries would be available along w/the national summary…??? :((
