There did not seem to be this thread anywhere so I decided to make one. Anyone who is transferring or plans to transfer for the class of 2015 to Stony Brook University can feel free to post his/her questions on this thread.

Question: When can transfer applicants applying for fall 2012 admissions be able to submit their applications and is this rolling? When will decisions be released?

@testdrive – Students can apply now, but Fall 2012 decisions will go out probably no earlier than mid-March. We work on Spring 2012 until we close the class in mid-February.

I’m planning on applying transfer for class of 2015 and I want to major in psychology. I’ve heard great things about the psych program here, but do you think you could tell me more about it?

I am currently a freshman and I just finished applying to SBU. I really want to go here and it seems like it would be a great school. I am stident-athlete at my current school and I would to get involved in the track and field team here. But after reading some reviews many students complain about the school and how sucky it is. I was actually shocked of how many student had bad reviews. But I still want to attend.

My reason for wanting to transfer are financial reasons, dorming, and better academics. Can someone provide more information on athletics?
Also- since the application is based on high school & college transcripts and SAT scores, is there a way of letting the school know me a little more?

The University fields 18 NCAA Division I teams. There are also numerous amateur-competitive and non-competitive athletic clubs and teams. I wouldn’t pay much attention to negative reviews.

Psych at SBU seems like a pretty awesome major, I think I’ll be taking a couple of the 200 level classes in the future even though it isnt my major. Anyway, you can get started by looking at this website which gives you a sample sequence for the major here. It shows both for a BA and a BS, so whichever you decide to go for, its there. On the side, look at ‘Courses’ for a list of the courses offered by the major as well as their descriptions and pre-requisites, they all seem so interesting IMO

I’m currently at a freshman at a top-100 university. I’m looking to transfer to SBU for many reasons – better sciences, music, new environment, etc. I want to know if I have a shot of transferring in, though. My high school stats are pretty rough since I was planning to pursue music performance (GPA around 3.1 UW–thanks to music classes–1670 SAT, class rank 14/250ish) and, to be honest, I didn’t care about my academics at the time. I did get into Stony Brook last fall for music performance, but I don’t think my grades were much of a factor. In college now, though, I have a 3.92 GPA (after one semester) as a biochemistry and molecular biology major in the honors program. Do I have a shot? Also, would it be more effective to apply as an “undeclared” major due to my not-so-good high school record? Any advice is appreciated, guys! Thanks!

Also, I’m out-of-state, if that means anything…

what are the chances of a first year college student transferring to stony brook cause the majority of us won’t have 24 credits at the time of application and the spots might be filled by the time out spring semester trancript reaches the university?

If that’s the case then you might want to do another semester at the college that you are now attending and then apply when you have the 24 credits and a 3.0 G.P.A. The other method is sending your SAT scores and High School transcript if I’m not mistaken. Good luck.

would ap credits count as part of the 24 credits cause if it does, i have enough. if it doesn’t, i would have to wait until the end of this semester

I received an e-mail today saying if I earned less then 24 credits I have to submit my ACT scores. Now I completed 16 and I’m working on 18 right now. I really don’t want to submit my ACT because its low and it will hurt my chances. Can I instead submit my mid year report in March instead of my ACT? Again I really don’t want to send it because I have a pretty decent shot of getting in and the test will ruin it. Another thing I have to transfer this year because of cost.

i think you should submit your ACT scores or else your application will be considered incomplete. i don’t think it’ll hurt your chances. it just won’t aid it. also, i don’t think stony has a mid year report

I’m currently a sophmore at a 4-year cuny college & I really want to transfer into Stonybrook & was worried I might not get in due to my previous semester’s grade.

My cumulative GPA is: 3.521

Freshman Year
First Semester GPA: 3.925
Second Semester GPA: 3.525
Deans List

Sophmore Year
First Semester GPA: 3.146 {messed up… I got a C+ & 2 B’s}

With out my second semester of my sophmore year included i have earned 38 credits & am expecting to earn 50 by this upcoming May. I have already submitted my application in January. I really want to go to SBU because they are one of the best journalism school’s in NYC & I would greatly appreciate any feedback you have to offer. Thank you and best of luck to everyone!
