You have to wait until April >.> They don’t give out a lot of merit scholarships though, it’s pretty random.

I see. Will we get anything in the mail as far as acceptance packages go?

If you’re accepted, I believe you do get something in the mail, but not if you’re deferred or rejected. Apparently last year they sent out scarves to all accepted EA applicants too. This is all hearsay, but DANG I’d like a scarf. :)

I’m so bummed I don’t know what to do with myself, because I’m thinking a deferral pretty much means “you’re not good enough to be accepted, but not quite bad enough to be rejected. Oh well. Just going to keep you around”. And when RD comes around, with all the HYPSM applicants, I’ll be slaughtered. I feel like some sort of a failure because pretty much everyone on these boards got accepted. I did get better S1 grades than the one I sent (Quarter 1), but I’m not sure how that will help. And I will not get anymore awards or anything like that, because I’m so friggin’ tired of everything. I’ll be starting on the violin and taking a break from all of this high school crap, as well as resuming all of my music lessons, and reading a lot, getting back what REALLY matters: my life.

I GOT IN WITH ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP OF $5000 PER YEAR
so, i basically had no reason to be freaking out all week, and i just want everyone to know that this forum and this website was the primary source of my freak-out-age. so, avoid viewing this forum as much as possible. it will only stress you out

got deferred. but congrats to those who got accepted!
GPA: 3.81 UW SAT: 1450 (M/Cr)

Hey Impero, DON’T feel like a failure. A lot of my friends at a “HYPSM” prep school got deferred too … you’re not any worse of an applicant than they are. I know it sounds trite, but a deferral just means that they’re not ready to make a decision on you yet. It’s effectively no different than having applied RD - you’ll find out in the spring. You wouldn’t feel bummed if you’d decided to apply to UChicago regular instead of early. The schools defer huge numbers of people so that they have as much control over their classes as possible. It’s just a game UChicago has to play to get a “balanced” class of the right size - it does not reflect personally on you. If they didn’t want you, they would have rejected you. There is no benefit to UChicago in “keeping people around” just for the sake of it. The admissions office clearly wants the opportunity to accept you into their class.

i got deferred and I dont know *** is happening. i lost a bit of my self-esteem. I’m not trying to be a bitter ■■■■■, but I just don’t understand what differentiates me and wangiz. Please don’t take this for me being a bitter *****. I just don’t understand what went wrong. I can see its not the scores… so

Impero, you’ve got exactly the right attitude here. Whatever school you end up at, it’s your life and the things you do with it that really make a difference. Keep your chin up, and for the record I’d love to see more people like you around.

congrats to wangiz!

That’s a nice way to put it, and I’m sure there’s a lot of truth to it. I just have to wait it out, and perhaps wow them with my improvements on my Semester 1 report card. But I think my 3.54 cumulative GPA might be my ultimate undoing. There’s a certain irrationality in getting all worked up over this, because there’s nothing I can do. Either way, the sun is still shining, and birds are still chirping. It’s a beautiful saturday, I aced my exams, it’s winter break. I’ll write supplements, read, watch TV, play COD and generally not let this drag me down.

Thanks! I just need to tweak this phail feeling some more. I’ll be back on my feet in no time :)

just wondering, how many of you who got in are science majors?

to all the acceptees, did you do the optional favorite things supplement?

I didn’t do the optional favorite things supplement. I just felt if I had written it would have just been a list of my favorite things which would not have necessarily strengthened my application.

Yup I made a list of my favorite films, books, and bands and wrote a brief blurb after each.

I did the optional supplement as well, and I think it helped to offset the blandness of my “Why Chicago” essay. I highly doubt it’s anything that could make or break your app, though!

Can someone tell me the % of acceptees/deferrals/rejections? THANK YOU!

I counted every entry in the accepted ‘phoenix’ facebook and got 1580 acceptances. The current estimate/rumor on # applied is 6960. This yields a 22.7% EA acceptance rate.

Much thanks, originalthought. That helps the curious observing statisticians as well.

i got accepted and i wrote the optional essay, except i feel like it was one of the worst essays i’ve ever written because i wrote it the same day i turned in my app
