Tests scores (if applicable):
29 ACT

Recommendation details:
I know that my recommendation from my AP English III, also my AcDec coach, is awesome. I’ve never even seen it, but I trust he did a spectacular job. I expect my Gov/Eco recommendation to be average. As for my counselor, she actually went around and asked teachers about me, so I think hers was a bit more informative about me.

Essay topic and details:
For the personal statement, I wrote about how a play of mine was picked to be directed and acted by the Theatre III and IV students. I went on how it solidified confidence in myself as a writer, how it geared me to want a career in writing, and how it also has allowed me to be receptive to criticism.

For the short Common Application essay, I discussed how I didn’t consider myself maternal—READ: Never having kids!—but I ended up taking care of my mother and brother.

My supplement was about Mandy Moore’s “Pocket Philosopher” and how I am just as easygoing and optimistic as the song.

Brief personal statement (optional):
Smith is my first choice (tied with Scripps, though), so I’m pretty hyped about my acceptance. I think what helped me the most was my personal statement and supplement. I put a lot of effort in writing the both of them. As for my extra-curriculars, I’m convinced they are the weakness of my application. I don’t have much love for clubs at the high school level and I had limited transportation. As for if I’m going to Smith, it depends if I get into Scripps and whether it has better financial aid for me.

Admission status: Accepted

Admission type: RD, but suprise early admission!

GPA: 3.8

Class rank: n/a

Extra-curriculars: President of AMnesty International Club and International Club for 3 years each, lots of volunteering, domestic and abroad, handbells, chorale, etc.

Recommendation details: i had 4 sent totally, 2 from major academic teachers, 1 from school chaplain/religion teacher, 1 from health care program director

Essay topic and details: my main essay was about not being selected for this community service program and my thoughts/reflections/growth

Brief personal statement (optional): I had a great interview, and picked up on a lot of little things about Smith that I loved and wrote about in my Why Smith? essay too, such as Crapappella and the handbells

Admission status: accepted

Admission type: RD (early notification)

GPA (unofficial): 4.12
Class rank: NA
Extra-curriculars: cross-country captain, managing editor of newspaper, track, editor of literary magazine, day student prefect, head of the Climbing Club and Baking Club, student tour guide, French and English tutor, library prefect, marathon training
Tests scores (if applicable): CR 800 / W 790 / M 780
Recommendation details: Two teacher recommendations (both very good, I think)
Essay topic and details: I wrote about injuring my knee and having to get surgery a month before I was supposed to run my first marathon. I essentially explained how this seemingly negative experience allowed me to reevaluate my priorities and come to appreciate my friends and my family more.

Congratulations to everyone who’s been accepted thus far!

Admission status: ACCEPTED :D

Admission type: RD, but a sneaky letter in february

GPA: 3.88 UW

Class rank: uhhh top 5 or 10%? school doesn’t send out rank soooo…

Extra-curriculars: Freethinkers Club, Student Government/Council, School Newspaper, Environmental Club, Leo Club, NAHS, French stuff, blah blah blah

Tests scores (if applicable): SAT superscore 2360, 800 USH 740 Lit, 5s on APUSH, Bio, French, Lit

Recommendation details: from my APUSH and AP Lit teachers, I waived my rights but they both liked me… idk. counselor one was probably generic because my school is huge

Essay topic and details: my main essay was really weird. it included both a numbered list and me blatantly listing several of my faults, and featured exactly 0 narrative anecdotes. people told me it was good, I obviously can’t judge my own work very objectively… my supplemental essays were fine, nothing special but good i guess (again, I’m not objective)

Brief personal statement (optional): I’m a legacy. My grandmother and great-grandmother both went to Smith, and I brought Grammy along for the on-campus interview which resulted in the cutest scenario everrrrr. Both my interviewer and Deb Shaver came to talk with and hug and give free things to my grammy, who had been a Gold Key guide back in the day, and the interview itself went really well. Deb and my grammy are the same height (4’7"ish), which is hilarious.
And on that note…
To all juniors thinking of applying or seniors waiting to hear back: I AM NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE AVERAGE ACCEPTED SMITH STUDENT. None of the early admits are. Pleaseee do not interpret these stats as the average or the norm. Don’t think you need a legacy or a 2300 or whatever. You don’t. That is all.

Decision: ACCEPTED!!! :D

Admission Type: RD, but early :D

Stats:

SAT IIs: 710 on Lit

ACT: 28

APs: Didn’t send. My school only has 2 AP courses for World History & US History, and the programs are less than stellar. I received 3s on both.

IBs: NA

GPA: ~98

Rank: 2/105

Other stats:

Subjective:

 • ECs listed on app: 4 years of drama (both spring and fall productions…currently Dolly in Hello, Dolly!), class president, Language Club secretary (planning a trip to Quebec in the spring, very involved), NHS secretary, very involved in HOBY NYE.
 • Job/Work Experience: Worked at an ice cream shop one summer. Had a prestigious internship with a neurosurgeon. Have put in over 500 hours of volunteer work over four years of high school at the Farmers’ Museum – I work in the old-fashioned pharmacy and interpret to visitors, perform medicine making demonstrations, and maintain the garden.
 • Essays (subject and responses): Awesome I wrote about how my love of Edgar Allan Poe has made me a writer, albeit an amateur one.
 • Teacher Recs: Stellar!
 • Counselor Rec: Never saw, but assuming good.
 • Applied on: January 9th, I believe.
 • Hook (if any): Nada.

Location/Person:

State or Country: New York

School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): My school is pretty poor; budget cuts have really done a number on our district, and as such, our resources are limited. But we have some really fantastic teachers and a GREAT music department.

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Female

I don’t think that anything about me constitutes a special early admittance, but whatever, I’m so so soooo excited!!! I wrote my essay about Edgar Allan Poe, and I worked hard on my supplements.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting, and many congratulations!

Brief personal statement (optional): SO THRILLED :)
