Hi guys! I just wanted all the deferrees to have some breathing space and chat in this thread (So we don't have to frown every time we read an "omg I've been accepted! ahhhh~" post.) The accepted people already have a facebook page and I don't think the red-font people would want to stick around here.

Was deferred at MIT, but accepted at Caltech.

Don’t really care about MIT at this point, just writing my HYPS essays. Would rather to go to an ivy any way :D. Seems they are more objective anyways (kind of ironic tbh).

I’m happy MIT considers me worthy of a second chance, but at the same time disappointed I didn’t get in. From the looks of this year’s and last year’s thread (admittedly a small and biased sample,) more were rejected this year. On top of this the facebook group only has 162 members currently which seems a bit low considering joining the group would have been one of the first things I would have done had I got in. This leads me to believe MIT was being more conservative this year and wants to focus on RA.

I applied 6:02pm on October 23 so I guess getting admitted on pi day would be appropriate.

Congratulations to all who were accepted and condolences to those rejected. If you were deferred remember you are awesome and still have a chance, MIT wouldn’t have deferred you otherwise as this would just be a waste of committee time. Best of luck and I hope to see you all at CPW. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Does anyone know when they will release admissions data for EA ie how many applied, how many accepted, and how many deferred? Also how many students are they planning to admit this year as 2016’s class size is larger than most years?

I’m now planning stuff to add to my application now that I’ve been deferred. I’m probably going to send a music supplement, but that requires me to compose a whole new piece by like February.
That being said, I’m assuming I’m not getting in at this point. I simply don’t have stand out characteristics at all: my one “unique” thing is music, and I wasn’t ever in a region band or anything.
EDIT: Never mind, I thought you needed two compositions. So that works in my favor.

I’ve accepted the fact that I’m deferred. Frankly I’m amazed that I’ve gotten this far; I’m only a junior in HS. I know that the road will likely end in rejection, but I’m happy that at least I didn’t get outright rejected.

Probably award updates and more website links that add to the quirkiness factor.

I don’t think they want essays in particular. Unless you were drastically affected by recent happenings (i.e. the shootings, family issues) it’s probably not worth it.

So, yeah, I’m gonna submit a music supplement, I just have a question involving that:
My humanities recommendation was my jazz improv teacher, so I don’t know if it would be weird to use him as my “music recommendation” for the supplement. If it is, I have my wind ensemble/marching band director that I can ask, so it’s not a huge deal.
Also, when should I give as a date to finish said recommendation? Most teachers want a day to have it done by, and I think the midyear report is due February 15th. So should I say February 1st, January 15th… or something else?
EDIT: To the guy asking what people added, I’m going to mention that I’m doing math club and science league this year, as well as self-teaching multivariable calculus. It’s all relevant stuff, I just didn’t start it prior to November 1st. >_>

I expected defer, so not too sad. I will update MIT with some links and some recent awards. I wish I could change some of my essays: writing other college app essays helped me understand myself more (something that wasn’t demonstrated on the MIT app). Oh well.

@Dr. molliebatmit: Since MyMIT doesn’t display optional materials, will I need to email admissions to check if my supplemental recommendation arrived? I submitted one for EA, but never considered the idea of it being lost, so I just want to check (USPS actually lost our school’s PSAT scores this year so that has made me paranoid). Thanks!

^Yep, you’ll need to email or call to check on supplemental materials.

Getting stuff in sooner is better. In general, you want to have things sent in by the end of January at the very latest – selection committee will begin around Valentine’s Day.
