I think the info that is posted in this one is useful, so if there is a way to encourage folks to post their “stats” here after posting their “decision” on the other that would be awesome. This is good info for folks who are crafting their lists, among other things.

I definitely agree and am in favor of doing both! I’ve always enjoyed reading people’s stories and seeing why they made the final choice. AdaQuince, I suspect your post will be particularly interesting… It’s just also really nice to be able to open it up and see the growing list of destinations at a glance. So yes, as originally intended, please do both! :D

Updating! as a shock to us all, son was WL at NYU

Applied : BFA Acting: Wright State, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Webster, Marymount, AMDA (accepted as a junior for the class of 2013); BA Acting: Oglethorpe

Rejected from CMU, pulled app from Marymount

Accepted: Wright State, Webster, AMDA, Oglethorpe
Waitlisted: NYU

Final Decision: Wright State. My son loved it from the first time he met everyone there in November. He never waivered on his decision. He got a very generous aid package today and called them to accept and make it official! We are so excited (and relieved) to have this decision made. I was thinking today what a wonderful journey this was! He started last January with a list of nearly 20 schools. We toured a few over the summer - some not even on his list - and that helped him figure out what he was looking for. By the beginning of his senior year, he was down to 10, ended up applying to 7, and found the perfect one for him! I am also grateful for all the advise on CC! Good luck to everyone as they finish this adventure!

Final Decision: SUNY PURCHASE

At first it was my top choice but the acceptance rate was really low, so i ended up wanting to go to UNCSA, but i got rejected from them and i thought that i would get rejected from SUNY too, but then i got a phone call, and im all about going into a rigorous program. My second and third choices were webster and Minnesota, however once i become a member of NY ill be paying 14K for tuition, so suny is CHEAP, and more convenient… Maybe not the prettiest, but that’s not what im looking for. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE TRAINING, AND CONNECTIONS.

Bump – if you’ve made your final decision, please contribute to this thread. It is helpful to next year’s group.

Applied to: Emerson, Ithaca, Syracuse, UNCSA, Rutgers, U of Minnesota, NYU, USC, Montclair, Drew, Muhlenberg, Pace, Boston University, SUNY Purchase

Accepted to: Emerson (BA), NYU, USC, Montclair, Drew, Muhlenberg, Pace (BA - BFA placeholder), and SUNY Purchase
Waitlisted: Rutgers and Minnesota

Final Decision: SUNY Purchase

Sorry – this is a long one. But hopefully it will be helpful to someone else this crazy decision-making month or someone else down the road. I wish I could say that this is his dream school, perfect fit, etc. But with the odds of getting into these programs so low, we were very cautious about falling in love with any one school. So the decision has been more of a process of elimination – which definitely makes it less exciting He really wants the training of a BFA over a BA, although he thinks he would be happy with Emerson’s BA. So even though he got some nice merit/talent scholarships from Drew and Muhlenberg, he has decided against them. And Emerson did not give him any merit scholarship, so we cannot afford it. Pace…really great merit/talent package, but too much uncertainty with new Film/Voiceover program. NYU and USC were really nice acceptances. He got a little bit of money from NYU which brought it down to (gulp) $62k, but again – way out of our range. Turning this one down definitely hurts a little since he has some background with NYU doing Adler weekend classes and Tisch summer program. USC is the great alluring unknown. We live on the EC, so we did not visit. Odds were so slim of getting in…He felt great coming out of the audition…then came the mysterious invitation to the campus event…the BFA acceptance…and the ZERO scholarship/aid letter. He loves the idea of LA, big school, and strong academics, so USC seems like a nice fit. But this field is so risky already, and while we completely believe in his potential, we cannot put ourselves and/or him in that kind of debt. Which leaves the options of SUNY Purchase and Montclair, and so he chose SUNY Purchase for reputation and quality of training. With all of the process behind him, he can now focus on embracing his decision and getting excited about this next chapter of his life! Congrats to all who have made their decisions, and best of luck to all who are still working through this tough process!

acting17 - sounds like you and your son put a lot of thought into this process and came out with a wonderful choice! Can’t beat Purchase’s price tag for such a great program. and as you say, now he can find the Purchase facebook page and chat with his new classmates - or simply enjoy the rest of senior year.

congrats to you both!

Applied to:
East Carolina University, Marymount Manhattan College, University of Miami, Point Park University, CMU, UNCSA, SUNY Purchase, William Peace University, UNC Greensboro

Accepted to:
East Carolina University, Marymount Manhattan, University of Miami, Point Park, William Peace, UNC Greensboro

Final Decision:
Marymount Manhattan College (BFA Acting)

My S’s top two out of his accepted schools were Miami and Marymount. Miami’s Financial aid was $6,880/yr. off of the $60,000 tuition. That put them out of the running- way too expensive. Marymount was a fit from the start. My S loved the BFA acting program and the school. I was impressed with how well they ran their admissions process, with an acceptance and FA earlier than any other school- and our highest FA award. We are very happy!

Applied : All Auditioned BFA Acting programs: U of Arts, Hartt, Depaul, CCM, Otterbein, UNCSA, CMU, NYU, BU, Rutgers, Syracuse, Ithaca, SUNY-Purchase, Juilliard

Accepted: U of Arts, Hartt, UNCSA, NYU

Waitlisted: Syracuse

Final Decision: UNCSA. This process could not have worked out better as I’m firmly convinced that UNCSA is the perfect place for my daughter notwithstanding the emotional attachment she had to CMU after the summer precollege program. She wanted a conservatory that would put her in the studio all the time. Check. She wanted a program that was strong in classical training. Check. She wanted a program that would let her continue to develop MT skills and UNCSA integrates voice training and dance in their program. Check. My daughter also wants opportunities to be in front of the camera and the film school at UNCSA provides lots of opportunities for students to be in student films. On every intellectual level, this was a perfect fit. Until Friday, the only downside was she had not been able to visit in person and needed to “feel” it. After a day of sitting in on classes and watching the Senior class production of Tis a Pity She’s A Whore – which was phenomenal – and after bonding with current and incoming students – it was a done deal. Financially, the only school that gave her a lot of money was U of Arts for a talent scholarship but it is still more expensive than UNCSA so UNCSA was also the least expensive options as well. Have no idea what I’m going to do with my life now.

Bumping again in response to Dreambelle’s request for a “decisions” thread–this must have drifted too far down the list! :)

Applied to: CMU, Ithaca, USC, UCLA, UMich, BU, Brandeis, NYU, bunch of non-audition schools

Accepted to: BFAs @ Ithaca, USC, UMich, NYU; BAs @ UCLA, Brandeis

Priority waitlist @ CMU, rejected @ BU

Final Decision: USC BFA

See the post in my thread for details on this one… Tisch was NOT my style, Ithaca’s academics and location can’t compare to SC, UCLA’s theater open house was underwhelming, and UMich was a close second but lost for location. SC was my number one from the beginning and I couldn’t be more in love with everything about it.

Best of luck to others making their final decisions! Feel free to PM me if we overlap in schools :)

Bumping this as a lot of decisions were made recently!

Apllied to: Emerson, Pace, Marymount Manhattan

Accepted to: BFA Acting - MaryMount, BFA Fim, TV - Pace

Final Decision: Pace

We spent some time on the WL @ Pace but got the call this week. Although there is some uncertainty surrounding a new program, their Program description reads like something our D would write as her perfect fit. She loved the kids she met and the faculty were her favorite of the bunch. She was set to go to Marymount but when Pace called, her decision was made. If she was more interested in stage performance rather than working in Film and TV, she’d have had a tougher decision to make between the two.

I love that the focus of the new BFA is to get kids prepared to WORK as actors. Really important part of the acting world that doesn’t get enough attention. Also, the speed in which Pace has established themselves as a great acting school really gave us confidence that the new BFA program will be a good one. They’ve always offered a great internship programs and we thought that this program would really be able to put kids in some great opportunities in the field.

We’ll know more soon, but are crazy excited for the opportunity.

Applied to: CMU ED, UNCSA, SUNY Purchase, Evansville, Webster, UCF, Brenau, Coastal Carolina, Otterbein, Shenandoah, VCU, Wright State, Point Park, DePaul (test optional route)

Accepted: Evansville, Brenau, Coastal Carolina, Otterbein, Shenandoah, Wright State, Point Park

Rejected: CMU, UNCSA, Webster, VCU, DePaul

Withdrew: UCF, SUNY Purchase

Final decision: Otterbein

Financial Aid played a huge part in the decision. Unfortunately, my D’s very low ACT scores (math brought her composite way, way down), had a huge negative impact on merit scholarships. She is ending up with a 3.6 GPA, but the ACT score was so low that we took a big hit on merit money. I did appeal for more money to two schools but with no luck. In the end, the final decision came down to Coastal, Otterbein, Point Park, and Wright State. Coastal and Point Park we then eliminated due to finances (and those broke my heart, really). That left Wright State and Otterbein. Technically, Wright State was a bit cheaper. However, Otterbein’s core requirements and the warmth we felt from students, faculty, and staff made the choice clear. I do find it ironic that Otterbein had at first been thrown in as an extra, just in case school. In the end, Otterbein is clearly her best fit.

Applied: Carnegie Mellon (BFA Acting/BFA Musical Theatre), Ithaca (BFA Musical Theatre), The University of the Arts (BFA Acting), Point Park (BA-BFA Musical Theatre), CCM (BFA Drama), Ball State (BFA Musical Theatre/BFA Acting), Pace (BFA Acting, BFA Musical Theatre, BA-International Performance Ensemble, BFA Acting TV, Film, Commercial) The New School for Drama (BFA Acting)

Accepted: The New School for Drama

Final Decision: The New School for Drama

ResrchMom for her daughter, high school graduate 2013. She auditioned for BFA in Acting

Accepted to: University of Michigan, Webster University, Otterbein University, University of Evansville, University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program

Rejected from: Juilliard, Carnegie Mellon University, DePaul University, Ithaca College, Emerson College

Waitlisted at: U of Minnesota/Guthrie. She was told that she was 2nd on the list. Came off waitlist April 16.

Final Decision: University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program

Junior year of high school we visited DePaul once and attended two of their performances, and visited U of Minnesota and attended three performances. We continued to attend performances at the U of Minnesota her senior year. We also have seen several plays at the Guthrie Theater over the years and have seen that several graduates of the program have been cast at the Guthrie.

Her first choice was DePaul because she felt a connection with the people there, thought the acting was fabulous, and simply loved the thought of living in Chicago. Her second choice in the past year has been the University of Minnesota. (I’m not saying that Juilliard and CMU were her first choices because they were really just dream schools and we knew the stats of getting accepted were so slim that we didn’t really talk about them as “first” choices, if you catch my drift). She is attracted to the “Company” model of Guthrie, CMU, and Juilliard.

Auditions: Other than Minn/Guthrie, she auditioned for the other nine at Unifieds in Chicago. She didn’t get a callback for DePaul, and that was a sad day. Her favorite audition experiences were: Juilliard, DePaul, Carnegie Mellon, Otterbein, and Webster. Her least favorites/not great were Emerson and Ithaca. The schools where she didn’t get a feeling either one way or the other: Evansville and U of Michigan. U of Minnesota asked her to do something off her resume from 5 years ago. She takes improv classes, so that came in handy. She made it up since she couldn’t remember it.

Monologues: She worked on her monologues for about 5 months. She chose Viola from “Twelfth Night” for her Shakespeare piece. She did Lizzie from “The Rainmaker.” By eliminating lines from “You Can’t Take it With You” she created a very nice monologue for Alice. Minn/Guthrie asks for a monologue from any character you would want to play, regardless of sex or age. She chose her piece from “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.”

Final Analysis: We don’t know why she was chosen or rejected from each school. In the end, she chose U of Minnesota because it follows the Company/Ensemble model, it has a partnership with the Guthrie Theater of Minneapolis, it’s the least expensive, and it’s the closest to home. She was awarded an Honors Program Scholarship (after we appealed) and a BFA Scholarship. Webster University was her second choice because she liked the people, especially the department head, its connection with the St. Louis Repertory Theater, and the cost and distance from home. U of Michigan offered no merit or financial aid so it was completely out of the question. Otterbein’s academics as a whole didn’t meet her needs. She didn’t connect with the people at Evansville.

photomom5 for my son:

Applied to: Shenandoah, Hartt, Julliard, PPU, Emerson, U of Arts, Univ of Utah, UNCSA, The New School of Drama and Montclair

Accepted: Hartt (EA), PPU, Univ of Utah, Montclair and The New School of Drama

FINAL DECISION: The New School of Drama

The on campus auditions he did were at Shenandoah and Hartt. He did a regional audition for PPU in Atlanta and the rest were at NYC Unifieds.

The Hartt acceptance arrived at the perfect time during this process. It arrived the same day as the Shenandoah rejection, which broke his heart. His sister goes to SU and he really wanted to go to school with her. He walked out of the SU audition knowing he was not getting in and was devastated. After thinking this over, it was a blessing in disguise, we absolutely love SU and would have loved having him there but now he will have his own path and it is the right one for him.

He absolutely loved the process after SU. He loved loved loved Unifieds and after adjusting his monologue after the U of Arts audition (he took my pain killers by accident and was not feeling his Equus monologue any more!!!), all but Emerson went well. He did not enjoy the Emerson audtion and I am thinking it was mutual!!! He did Unifieds sick as a dog and still enjoyed the process and the adrenaline flowed.

In the end, we went back and forth about Hartt and Montclair, I mean it was a topic of conversation every day. He was in shows from February through April, so it was tricky trying to schedule visits. Then, The New School, which was a walk-in, suddenly started recruiting him, and the game changed. We had to let Montclair know before we could schedule a visit so sadly, Montclair dropped off the list. PPU was next, they had offered him a wonderful scholarship and were in constant touch with him, so that was hard as well. As he had already visited (and loved) Hartt, we made a last minute decision to visit The New School, this was important as this is not the strictly conservatory style of program he has always talked about and he fell in love. Attended a class in the Eugene Lang school, met current non-drama undergrads as well as some MFA drama students and any doubt in his mind was erased. There are dorms and a meal plan, which is my requirement for his school and we left NYC after leaving his deposit. In addition, he received a wonderful scholarship, Hartt does not seem to have the money.

The other factor that he loved was the opportunity to be in the first BFA class at The New School. Frankly, with no upperclassman to compete against, the odds are good they will be getting the faculty’s undivided attention and much will be expected from these kids. This is the type of challenge my son loves, and I think he will thrive.

Accepted to: Northwestern (BA), NYU Tisch (BFA at ETW), University of Miami (BFA), University of Illinois (BFA). Non-audition BAs included Indiana University, Miami of Ohio, Temple, Rutgers, Minnesota, UMichigan (LAS)

Audition BFA Rejections: CMU, UMichigan, UMinnesota, DePaul, Rutgers

Final Decision: University of Miami! :-)

I had a gut feeling at Unifieds that UMiami was the place for my D. We loved the reception at sign in and it was her favorite audition. What I appreciate is that she can bring her whole self there: the actor, the dancer, the budding singer, and the academic. It is an intimate conservatory within a Top 50 private research university where they encourage students to explore all of their interests inside and outside the theater department. With a gorgeous campus, amazing school spirit, super-friendly students, supportive faculty and generous merit aid to boot, it was an easy decision. So proud to be the parent of a 'Cane!

This is the “final decisions” list and not the “just the list” posts, right? So, I can say congratulations skewlcounselor on your D’s decision?! Seriously, job well done for your daughter!

Congrat’s to Skew’s DD!!! It sounds absolutely fabulous and so glad she can bring all of her passions together in one place!! HORRAY!!
