Class of 2017 - Final Decisions

I'm starting the final decisions thread, seeing there are a couple of people who are already done :)

I'm following the instructions given by Dramamamaof4:

Final Decision:
Then you can add a few sentences about how you (or your kid) reached a decision. I also liked it when they listed stats, type, what they think made them stand out...

MILKSHAKESPEARE
Applied to: California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), Columbia College Chicago, Central School of Speech and Drama, University of the Arts (UArts), University of the Arts London - Central Saint Martins (UAL)
Accepted to: CalArts and Columbia College Chicago
Rejected from: Central School of Speech and Drama and UArts
Withdrew from: UAL
Waitlisted at: -
Final Decision: CalArts

It was my first choice from the very beginning and my dream school. I didn't even have to think twice. I wanted a school that would let me experiment and try new stuff and teach me a bit of everything, instead of 'just Meisner' or 'just Strasberg'. I also wanted to have the opportunity to develop my playwriting skills and show my work (CalArts has a 'New Works' festival) and to live in an artistic community and be able to collaborate with artists from different m

AHermitt’s D

Applied to: Agnes Scott College- Decatur GA, Brenau University (Gainesville Theatre Alliance)- Gainesville GA, Oglethorpe University- Atlanta GA, Wesleyan College -Macon GA
Accepted to: All
Rejected from: None
Waitlisted at: None
Final Decision: Wesleyan College

A few of you gave advice on another thread, as I felt that daughter was playing it too safe in not auditioning for the big theatre schools. Brenau was the most like the big theatre schools of the ones she applied to. Oglethorpe came in second but it is very Shakespeare focused. Also, 3 of 4 schools are women’s colleges. Thanks to everyone’s help, I came to learn that my daughter, while extremely young (still 16) knew that she wanted a strong liberal arts program, and also wanted to stay close to home. Grad school for theatre and costuming is in her sights.

All the schools offered generous scholarships based on SAT (she was homeschooled so grades were pretty irrelevant). Brenau gave an additional theatre scholarship. Her chosen school, Wesleyan, gave her a full tuition scholarship based on her theatre audition and meeting a certain SAT score. Had she chosen some of the big names (as talented as she is) she wouldn’t be on full scholarship, nor would she have time for liberal arts.

The main monologue she used in her auditions was the sleepwallking scene from Macbeth (even though she was told to stay away from it). She also sang Turn Back O Man from Godspell.)

You should also offer a section for what type of degree you’re going for ;]

Bumping this up from page three. I’m betting a few more people will be ready to post on it within the next few days!

Okay, I guess I was the next person ready to do this! My son has NOT heard from everyplace, but he made his decision last week and is ready to move on. Here we go:
Applied to: Auditioned: Otterbein, Boston University, Ithaca, Muhlenberg, DePaul, Hartt, JMU, Evansville. Non-auditioned: U. Montana, U. New Hampshire, U. Rhode Island.
Accepted to: Otterbein, Ithaca, JMU, U Montana, UNH, URI
Rejected from: BU, DePaul, Evansville (accepted academically)
Waitlisted at:
Haven’t heard back from: Hartt (accepted academically), Muhlenberg
Final Decision: OTTERBEIN BFA ACTING.

He is so incredibly psyched!! We first visited Otterbein two years ago over spring break of his sophomore year, and he had that feeling you hear about (and that neither of my older kids ever experienced) of being at home the minute he stepped onto the campus. We went to an admissions event his junior year, have been to several shows, and he auditioned on campus in December, three days after coming down with the flu. Otterbein never stopped feeling “right” to him, even after he fell in love with BU after last summer’s pre-college program, and he signed and returned his scholarship letter the day it arrived in the mailbox. I am so glad he went with his instincts!

Congrats Times3 to you and your son! How exciting to be done and to feel like the fit is perfect!

Well, both my older kids hemmed and hawed and waited till April 30th to decide on a college (both loved their choices, btw), so I feel like the third time must have been the charm. Stressful process, happy ending. Can’t wait to see more people add to this thread in the coming weeks!

Congrats, Times3! Hopefully in the next week to week and a half I can finally post for my D’s decision!

I hope so, ugadog–your daughter’s story has been so wonderful to follow!

Can I suggest we use a different thread for congratulating people on final decisions. I started to write one last night and then I thought this thread would be far more useful for next year’s class if we just limited the posts in this thread to the actual decisions. Everyone is so supportive here. We’ll end up with 10 congratulation posts for every decision post. We could use either the waiting, waiting thread or perhaps just bring back to life the checking in thread. If people have any different thoughts, use the waiting waiting thread to discuss to leave this thread for just final decisions.

It seems to me like this could get quite a lot of traffic soon. How do we get it pinned to the top with the acceptance threads?

I finally got them to pin the acceptance threads by using the contact us function and asking to have it pinned.

I might also suggest we eliminate “Applied To”, since “Accepted to” and “Rejected from” covers it all. (Or, alternatively, just use “Applied To” and “Accepted to” and eliminate “Rejected from” because who wants to relive those any how!)

ActingDad and others, on the CC Parents Forum (oops I almost said “on the normal school thread,” lol) they have a thread for “applause” that is a companion to the “acceptances” thread. It is called “Class of 2017: Celebrate, Discuss, Support Here.” It’s purpose is to pull the comments out of the “acceptances” thread, so that thread becomes just “The List” of acceptances.

Marbleheader’s Son

Applied: Early decision to Boston University, CFA, BFA Acting
Accepted: Thank goodness!
Final Decision: Terriers, all the way!

We took a Theatre Department tour in August, right before the start of his junior year. The tour guide was wonderful, and there was only one other student/parent, so we had a lot of time to ask questions. She mentioned BUSTI at that time. S walked out and said, “Well, that’s where I’m going to school.” And that was that - LOL! But as the year went on, he seemed to waver a bit about following down an actor’s path (non-supportive friends, including a toxic girlfriend and her mother who told him that he was crazy to try theatre. Thankfully they have been out of the picture for awhile now). So, even though it was a financial hardship, we offered him BUSTI to see if he wanted the BFA and BU, for that matter. The rest is, as they say, history! If he didn’t make the academic cut into the university, I think he would have ended up at Hartt. He never mentioned a gap year, but I think he would have gone to Hartt, thinking he would transfer to BU (but my gut tells me he would have been okay once at Hartt). Only bad thing about BU . . . guess where that toxic girlfriend is going to college??!!??!!?

Congrats all the way around… here is my offering for my D
All programs were by audition
Applied : Hartt,(BFA Acting Pace( BA international performance ensemble),Rider( BA theater performance,Rowan( BA Musical Theatre), Stockton ( BA theater performance) and Albright(BA theatre and Costume Design)
Accepted : ALL
Final decision: Albright college for interdisciplinary degree in Theatre and Costume Design.

All schools offered decent financial packages, but Hartt and Albright were our final two…it came down to scholarship, performance and technical opportunitities and the 2 hour distance from home. As we still have two sons in college( with one heading to grad school) we really could not afford to pass up the scholarships. Our D loves the close knit feeling at Albright and feels like she will get the total college experience along with close teacher student ratio.
We are very happy for her. wishing all the Drama kids and parents of the class of 2013 the best.

Applied : BFA Acting: Wright State, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Webster, Marymount, AMDA (accepted as a junior for the class of 2013); BA Acting: Oglethorpe

Rejected from CMU, pulled app from Marymount, assuming a no on NYU because it was a reach academically.

Accepted: Wright State, Webster, AMDA, Oglethorpe

Final Decision: Wright State. My son loved it from the first time he met everyone there in November. He never waivered on his decision. He got a very generous aid package today and called them to accept and make it official! We are so excited (and relieved) to have this decision made. I was thinking today what a wonderful journey this was! He started last January with a list of nearly 20 schools. We toured a few over the summer - some not even on his list - and that helped him figure out what he was looking for. By the beginning of his senior year, he was down to 10, ended up applying to 7, and found the perfect one for him! I am also grateful for all the advise on CC! Good luck to everyone as they finish this adventure!

Congrats on the latest decisions! Would anyone be interested in keeping a list that is JUST the decisions, like the MT thread has? It’s quicker to check and see the latest updates. I am happy to start it and will post the list of what we have so far, alphabetized. Am basing this on what’s been done past years, by the way. :)

I think it’s a great idea, Times3. Thanks for doing that! And enjoy your holiday weekend. Next Easter you will have a college freshmen with dirty laundry at your door, along with a new son-in-law!

That would be much easier, thank you!!!
