My son was accepted and got a Provost-level merit scholarship. He wants to major in computer science with a focus on game programming.
GPA: 3.93
SAT: 1960 (680M, 670CR, 610W)
ACT: 31
State-level year-round and HS varsity long-distance swimmer (but nowhere near Div I times!), robotics, acting, film club, part-time job as a lifeguard.
No AP courses - none offered at his HS. He was probably noted to have taken the “most rigorous” curriculum offered, though. He did take two programming courses (C++) through Stanford’s EPGY program, earning an “A” in each.
Essays: OK, I thought. But I don’t really know…
LOR: He didn’t see them. Probably pretty good.
Caucasian male from Hawaii.

Now we just have to see what kind of need-based aid they give him, and if he gets into his first choice (USC).

Jeeves914 — I applied for a Biology and Polysci double major. I was just shocked since the program I’m in has a really good relationship with DU seeing as they started out of Denver.

I haven’t gotten my paper aid letter yet, but I checked my aid award on the website (I just got it today; I was accepted about a month ago, maybe a little less)

Major: Computer science, Ritchie school

Stats: SAT - 2140 (one session; i don’t remember if DU takes superscore but I only took the test once)
WGPA: 4.06, gr 10-12 total GPA: 3.61
Class rank: somewhere around 110 out of maybe 430 or so? basically bottom of the top 25%

Merit aid: Chancellor scholarship (18k/year; i think it’s usually 21k but i submitted my CSS like a month late)

total aid: $47,700

even with loans and work study (which comprise a very small fraction of the aid i’m being offered) this is absolutely the most reasonable offer i’ve gotten by far. I have pretty much decided that this is where i’m going :)

@smaithesmai, S14’s chancellor scholarship is for $21,000 but is split up on the financial aid form into two parts, 18,000 for the scholarship and 3,000 for residence hall grant. Do you have a residence hall grant in your award? If so, I think that is the balance of the Chancellor’s scholarship.

@sowest ohhhh! ok, i was wondering how that worked! yes, i do have the residence hall grant! okay, thank you for clearing that up, i wish the letter had made that a little more apparent, hehe!

My S got similar for CS. He got a Provost’s, $19K total (16+3), and a lot of other grant aid. It’s affordable, and with a manageable amount of debt (just the Federal loans).

Conngrats to you folks on the Chancellor’s!

We are very happy with the aid. Looks like they really want to attract good students to their CS program. Since S was just rejected at USC (it was a reach, even with his 3.93 UW and 31 ACT), he is excited to be going to Denver.

Does anyone know how they treat outside scholarships? Do they just cut grant aid or can they cut the Family contribution or loans? Not to be greedy, but not much point in spending a lot of time applying for little scholarships if they won’t affect the bottom line.

But now we have to go shopping… this Hawaii boy will need some sweaters and socks!

I’m not sure about outside scholarships, but I’m wondering the same thing. If I remember to contact financial aid and find anything out, I’ll post.

I emailed, after I found 2 contradictory answers online. On the general FA pages they say that outside scholarships reduce loans first. But on the specifics of S’ s award, one grant (from the Ritchie school) says that it is meant to meet need after all other sources are tapped, including the Federal loans, implying that an outside scholarship will reduce that grant first. So I emailed the FA office and asked. Will let you know the answer when I get one.

I was accepted to the Ritchie School (engineering, undecided) a while back with the $16k University’s scholarship. Info: 3.61 UW GPA, 2130 SAT, 2/300 rank, currently on a gap year. Got the FA package in the mail today and was met with a nice surprise of the Richie School Scholarship. Total gift aid is $51,450. Definitely considering DU more now, but I’m still waiting on one more decision.

@Sweetbeet I have the same question as you, am interested to hear the response.

In response to my email, they called me, and told me that outside scholarships will not reduce grant aid until your total COA is met. They go first to reduce any loans in your package.

We put in our deposit last night, so S is going to be a Pioneer!
