Sorry to hear the news. With those stats. I’ve heard multiple stories of kids with excellent stats being denied, friends, siblings, with nearly the same numbers and one gets in when the other doesn’t. At some point I guess it comes down to luck.
Good luck wherever you end up, they’ll be lucky to have you.

This proves that showing interest helps you here is what they said on Facebook.

“Congratulations, Hakeem! We are so happy for you. We’ve been crossing our fingers for you since August. Please keep in touch with us. We hope to see you on campus this fall!”

@135pipe thanks for your responses man. I showed considerable interest with UF, calling them several times and emailing them consistently. I visited the school twice and my brother currently goes there. I’d be shocked if that was the reason I didn’t get it but who knows?

I’m sorry to hear about your situation. I know that UF suspiciously seems to occasionally reject students with great stats like you. I do know that they are a school that likes to stick to a certain percentage per high school (with some exceptions). Their reasoning behind this policy is that they want geographic diversity and don’t want to give away all their spots to kids from good schools in large school districts that tend to have greater resources. It could be that a lot of kids from your school applied to UF and you were caught by the blunt end of this, in my opinion, misguided policy

@snowy58red - I’m in nearly the same exact position as you. I’m really sorry. I know tons of people with much worse stats than us getting in and it really blows. Honestly though, UF has become obsessed with stats in recent years and is becoming more of a machine. I’m not sure what your plans are, but other than Miami I think the second best option in-state has to be UCF especially if you’re thinking about an engineering/science related field. They are a huge school and are still growing, they have a better education than you would think, it’s located in Orlando which always has something to do and they give a TON of scholarships! If you haven’t already you should seriously consider applying there. I’m 99% sure I’m going there, depending on what Auburn gives me along with the scholarship they’ve already sent me lol. It would have to be a lot to change my mind though. Good luck though and I hope you’re not too crushed. Don’t think that we’re worse than people who were accepted because it’s pretty clear that UF’s admissions department has something strange going on there.

@amissy14 - Congrats on your acceptance, you deserve it. Thanks for your comment as well. Others have brought the same idea up as well and it’s certainly plausible but I know several kids who are just taking a few AP classes (not even half) and have many open periods for late arrival/early release and have a worse unweighted GPA than mine even though I’m in IB and worse test scores than mine and they got in. I’m sure there was some reason I’m not thinking of but that’s not it, unless they faked their numbers in their application.
