@ Lillian … in that case we are in trouble

@ljmom
Here’s the exact wordings from UCLA regarding alternate major:
http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/faq/FR_During.htm

Although, I know that in the past the College of Eng’g offers admittance to applicant’s alternate major.

@2018dad, I am so sad about this. I just sent a note to my son. OMG is appropriate her. It was my mistake and I directed him to apply Engineering as the first choice and then L&S as the second choice. Same as what we did for UCSD.
His school is no help in these matters.

Would UCLA admit student to an alternative major of their [UCLA] choice or undeclared if the student’s requested major impacted?
Now I know that my son has very little chance (or no chance) getting selected to CS major. In his case, would he be considered for another major within engineering?

@ljmom Yeah, schools should be more proactive about warning us of competitive majors. I know that technically it’s not their job, but considering everything they do help with, this wouldn’t be much trouble. :s

@2018dad Hope they do the aame this year. Ethically, they should consider it, since they asked the applicants for it. If they don’t want to consider it, they should remove it from the app. :/

I don’t want to give more bad news but it’s better to be informed than not. Last year, Computer Science has the lowest acceptance rate among Eng’g majors: 12.6%

@Lillian330, You have point there. They should have included this on the application offering second choice only to L&S. One good news is that it is easier to accept the outcome [reject] on Friday. His first reject.

Only consolation is that there was only one option in CAL so he applied only to L&S. Hopefully he will have a chance there.

@Lillian330
The good news is you applied as Chemical Eng’g major, if I recall. That major is not really “impacted”. Last year, it has a higher acceptance rate (22.4%) than UCLA’s overall acceptance rate (20.43%).

@ljmom First rejections gotta be tough. Let’s hope for the best though. If anything, he does have a great shot at Berkeley!

@2018dad Thanks for the info! This gives me hope.

rejections suck but they happen. I got rejected at at SDSU but got accepted at UCLA and Berkeley. Some times it doesn’t make sense but I’m here and I’m extremely happy that i made the decision to attend ucla

Can someone tell me the acceptance for the major of biology please?

Thanks @ Lillian330. it is going to be tough.

ljmom says:

The entire college application process is very confusing, and I don’t see how anyone can come out of it without making some mistakes. It doesn’t help when a school like UCLA asks on the application for your alternate major, but doesn’t note that they seldom grant an alternate major.

@SoCalDad2, I am hoping that they would consider the alternative request. Only the time will tell.
I couldn’t find anything on this subject on previous threads… whether they had actually offered admission to the alternative for those who had their first choice as CS.

When our son applied to UCLA and UCB, the question was whether he should go for engineering, but potentially be rejected, or go for something else. We decided it make more sense to be rejected for what he wanted to do, than be accepted for what he did not want to do. And he applied for Undeclared Engineering, which made the odds even longer.

I am hopeful again…

This could mean that they will not consider alternative choices within engineering if the second choice is another major in engineering. But in my sons case, he chose a second choice that is in L&S. He doesn’t mind whether he is in engineering or L&S as long as he gets to do CS.

@Ijmom
There is no “pure” Computer Science at L&S. My daughter is interested in Computational Linguistic/Voice Recognition/Artificial Intelligence so she applied as Computer Science and Linguistics major under L&S.

Does anyone know how they will notify regents candidate if we got the sholorship or not? Will it be on the portal, email, financial aid…?

@2018dad,
My son’s application shows.
Major: Computer science
Alternate major: Undeclared Physical Science

@ljmom He wouldn’t be doing CS if he was put in L&S then.
