I’ve been lurking around here for a while now to see how applicants are doing.
I am a current student at CMC and recently attended a talk by the dean of admissions and financial aid about this year’s applicant pool. Here are a few key things he said for anyone interested:
Just over 7,000 Applications received
The admit rate for the Class of 2019 is projected to be 9.5% (first single-digit acceptance rate among LACs)
Admissions shoots for 165 ED admits total (<5 defers, if any)
This year's targeted yield is 330
Just over 1,000 international applicants
The admit rate is similar for both international/domestic applicants
These are just some quick notes that I jotted down. Feel free to discuss here.
The yield rate is usually around 50% for RD admits. So if you admit 165 ED and are targeting to enroll ~330, that’s roughly around another 330 RD admits. Not sure how many total apply RD.
Thanks for posting this interesting info, @Carotid. My D was accepted ED1 to Pomona so she withdrew her CMC app, but my husband went to CMC so between the two of them we’re very interested in the latest CMC news. If you hear info about 2019 acceptance rates at the rest of the 5C’s, please let us know.
Over the past year, I’ve read a lot of Chance Me threads where it seems like the persons responding are woefully misinformed about how selective CMC has become. I’ve seen lots of people with respectable but not awesome stats told CMC is a “match” when no school with such a low acceptance rate can be a match. For that matter, people also underestimate how difficult it is to get into Pitzer.
For all of those waiting for RD decisions, best wishes and I hope you get into CMC or, if not, another great school that’s a great fit for you.
Hey @Carotid. Technically, Pomona was the first LAC to have a single digit acceptance rate (this year’s was 9.76%), but it’s cool that 2 of 5 Cs will be so selective. I’m hoping to hear good news from CMC this week!
Pomona’s decisions already came out, so I guess what they’re saying is that TECHNICALLY Pomona was the first college to have a single-digit acceptance rate. Like it matters though, it just shows that both colleges are practically impossible to gain admission to.
@expresate @teagkni Yeah, I was just noting the fact that Pomona already released decisions. No biggie because CMC is likely to have an even lower acceptance rate considering the fewer number of students they can admit.
Does anyone know if any students gets accepted at more than one of the 5C’s or do the schools coordinate results and only one of the 5C’s accept a student and not any other school, if at all???
People do get accepted to more than one 5C. The admissions processes for each school are different.
CMC and Pomona will both be the first LACs to have the single digit acceptance rate. It doesn’t matter if Pomona released theirs first; the note is based on this year’s class.
But Pomona’s will go up, the 9.76 looked like what they’ve let in now, discounting waitlist admits etc. They also said they over-corrected a bit and admitted very conservatively this year to avoid overfilling their class like last year. Might go up, we’ll see who wins their petty bragging rights this year.
And the 5Cs don’t coordinate their results, but they all clearly look for very different kinds of students, so cross admits tend to be relatively rare.
^ I know! I posted their announced numbers earlier. The 790 is the mid March number.
My post responded to 13 and the expectation that the number will go up after spinning the wait list. Looking at the past CDS shows how many students are USUALLY admitted.
