For the Why Georgetown essay, I talked about how much I valued Georgetown’s theology requirement and how I’ve always been interested in having theological discussions with people of other religions given my background as a young woman who has gone to a Jewish day school for her whole life. Then, I talked about The Hoya and how Georgetown’s location in D.C. is advantageous to an aspiring journalist like myself.

Rate your essays: Not to toot my own horn, but probably the best I’ve ever written. I’ve been writing for a few years professionally and been getting published since the beginning of high school so I wrote my first essay about what writing means to me and how it has helped me cope with yearning and uncertainty. I wrote my SFS essay about “gendercide” and infanticide and I wrote my supplemental question about working at Teach For America.
Rate your recs: Pretty Amazing. The teachers who wrote mine had me for 2 years each, and really got to know me on a very personal level as well and could vouch for my abilities.
Extracurriculars:
News Anchor for school report, Vice President of Sigma Sorority, GDP researcher at Teach for America, debate mentor with IDEA debate, Have been playing the veena (a south Indian string instrument similar to the sitar) for 11 years, singing classically for 12 years, playing drums in my school orchestra for 2 years, been a youth coordinator at the temple I attend, been a junior editor at my school yearbook for 2 years, and been a mentor with Reading Partners for the past year.

[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Luck.

Hello, everybody. I hope I am not interrupting this thread. I just a question that I hoped one of you would be able to respond

I completed the first part of my application to Georgetown thinking I was going to go as an EA applicant, but I decided later to apply as regular decision. So, I received a letter in the mail indicating the GU Admissions had not received the second portion of my application (essays), and they are now considering me for Regular Decision. What just happened? Did I just get deferred? I didn’t even really apply since they considered me without all my forms completed. Will this hurt me in Regular Decision?

By the way, congratulations to everyone that was accepted!

@brigadeiro No, you didn’t get deferred, as they couldn’t completely evaluate you for admission without a completed application. It shouldn’t hurt you in the regular round, but you could always email admissions and explain that you didn’t blow it off, but that you meant to switch to RD

Thank you @writeallnight‌ . The whole situation made me very confused. Thank you for your answer, and good luck with all your college applications.

** Decision: Accepted to MSB **

[] Counselor Rec: AMAZING. She loves me and knows me very well and I know she wrote a great rec.
[] Additional Rec: From my junior year pre calc teacher and I’m sure it was great, he really liked me

[] Strengths: Transcript (straight A’s) and scores
[] Weaknesses: lots of competition from my high school
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was recently on the news and got a lot of media attention for a safe driving program at my school that I was on the board for. My interviewer sent the link to the video from Fox to the admissions office, I’m not sure if they were actually able to see it. [/li][/ul]General Comments:

[] School Type: Residential Public Magnet
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Lower/Middle
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Good test scores, good ec’s
[] Weaknesses: Maybe the rec’s weren’t great? No legacy. Also got a suspension recently
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I got a suspension and I’m probably one of the most over-represented groups at Georgetown[/li][/ul]General Comments: Really upset I didn’t make it as the STIA program at Georgetown is/was perfect for my interests in IR. Hoping things work out in the next couple months. I know an alum who really likes me and works for the government now who I might consider reaching out to. Talking to my CAC as well about what I should be doing.

[ color=green]Decision: Accepted[/color]

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2200 (770 CR, 660 M, 770 W)
[] ACT: none
[] SAT II: 780 US History, 690 Biology, 660 Math II, 760 Lit, 610 Spanish
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.93, but 4.26 weighted
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn’t give rank but top 20% of 154 students
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): English Language (5), US Gov’t (5), US History (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: 4 APs (Calc, English Lit, Spanish, and Physics) and one college history class
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):Three choirs, Literary magazine, Campus Ministry and Service (Prayer coordinator), Music Honor Society (officer), Recreational soccer, NHS, Fundraising committee
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: lots of little things
[] Summer Activities: service camp two years in Native American communities, Summer Reading Program volunteer, some choir trips to Europe
[] Essays: all about how I love to sing and my choir wins awards and how I connect singing to my academics. My shorter activities one was about my service trips. My school-specific one was about how I love language and want to study linguistics.
[] Teacher Recommendation: A nightmare! For the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, they wanted a foreign language teacher, but mine just left the school this year so I had to ask someone I’d only had for two months!
[] Counselor Rec: Probably pretty good. My counselor’s pretty cool.
[] Additional Rec: Awesome, from my great History and Gov teacher.
[li] Interview: I think it went pretty well. My interviewer seemed interested in my answers, at least.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Linguistics
[] State (if domestic applicant): Oregon
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: private, Catholic, single-sex
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: just under $100K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Most of the test scores, GPA, essays
[] Weaknesses: math test scores, extracurriculars nothing too special
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really don’t know, looking at some of the other people who applied. Maybe they needed some more people from Oregon, although about ten people from my school applied. Maybe my essays were better than I thought. More likely, no one else wants to major in linguistics. (Faculty of Languages and Linguistics has a 50% acceptance rate  ). Just really glad and amazed I got in: [/li][/ul]General Comments:

@Frenholfer Georgetown requires that you submit every score from every sitting of both the SAT and ACT… so i would get on that

Oh yeah, oops I probably sent it then, I got a 34 and a 33 from the first two times that I took it. I also tanked a 560 on SAT French in May

I don’t have the emotional energy to fill in all of the details but in a nutshell:
Decision: Deferred

Objective:
ACT: 33
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
3/300 - ranking
Oh just every damn AP class available in the world

Subjective:
Great (great) interview
Internships with U.S State Dept
Strong experience with family farms and agriculture
Tons 'o academic honors/citations
Great recs

Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Middle
Hooks : nada

Reflection
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: 3 reasons:

 1. it’s a crapshoot
 2. I didn’t only apply to Georgetown (hard enough) but to the Walsh school which is insanely hard to get into.
 3. i’m not in the group that they’re seeking (white middle-class white girl with no hooks) and my stats were not superior enough to overcome the lack of hooks.

sigh.

That’s okay…there’s a world of college rejections waiting out there for me! onward & upward.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2340 (800CR, 740M, 800W)
[] ACT: 35 (36, 36, 35, 32)
[] SAT II: 800 m2, 790 lit, 790 USH, 780 bio M
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): probably top 5%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 euro hist, 5 ush, 5 bio, 5 psych, 4 enviro, 4 gov
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: 5 APs, 1 honors.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National merit semifinalist, AP Scholar w. Distinction, Questbridge Finalist
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): quite a few things. art, literature, science, volunteer. Leadership positions in most.
[] Job/Work Experience: 2 jobs, research internship over the summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: things I’m passionate about
[] Summer Activities: jobs, internship
[] Essays: pretty ok. I wanted to submit one that I LOVED but it depended on format, and the Georgetown app didn’t allow italics. so I had to submit a different one, I guess 7.5/10 for the main essay? the other essays were probably around there too.
[] Teacher Recommendation: should be good. I got one from a teacher who’s an alum
[] Counselor Rec: said it was the best one he’s ever written for a student at my school
[] Additional Rec: -
[li] Interview: really cool and chill, the person said they could see me at Georgetown.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: y
[] Intended Major: I believe i put down “undecided”
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: medium public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender:
[] Income Bracket: low
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): low income, personal tragedies.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: scores, numbers, personal situation.
[] Weaknesses: maybe the smaller essays, since i really was pretty wiped out doing several EA applications.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i know i’m a fairly consistent applicant overall, but i think what pushed me over the edge was the main essay and recs. [/li] [/ul]General Comments:
it feels so amazing not to have to freak out about RD decisions anymore. i can’t wait to meet others who’ve been accepted! for those who have not, let me congratulate you in advance for all your amazing RD acceptances :)

@Frenholfer‌ yeah just make sure all your scores are in lol. That goes for everyone. I would hate for someone to get in trouble over it… I got a 630 in Spanish lol… They’re so hard  I’m hispanic but I learnt spanish in school only, so I felt like I did horribly, but because of students who are native speakers and take it, the curve is all messed up  that’s a great French score if you aren’t a native speaker  good luck in RD! I was so glad I made it EA because I have no new testing… Finished in June lol

[ *] Job/Work Experience: I started my own equestrian business teaching young kids how to ride, training horses, stable care. I also have interned two summers as a camp counselor at an Invention camp.
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Started an organization to break down cultural barriers in different countries through letter writing, have partners in 5 different countries.
[ *] Summer Activities: Lived with a host family for one month in Uganda before my junior year with a state dept. sponsored program; teaching/working/running business; horse showing
[ *] Essays: I stand by them. I can’t really judge them, but I thought/was told that they were interesting and well-written and showcased my personality and ambitions. However, I AM a little worried about my SFS one. It was slightly risky in that I talked about cultural unawareness and single-stories as being the cause of so many issues in the world, as well as the western savior complex…so maybe it was offensive? I don’t know.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: 8-9/10 I’d expect they were very good: one from my philosophy/social studies teacher and one from my english teacher/newspaper advisor.
[ *] Counselor Rec: 9/10, knows me super well, I’d imagine would do a great job.
[ *] Additional Rec: From program that selected me to go to Uganda. I haven’t seen her in a while but the ones she wrote last year got kids into MIT, GU, and Dartmouth

[ *] Strengths: I think my extracurriculars are pretty great and I’ve started things (organization) and linked them back to what I’ll do at GU. My essays I think were well-written, but again, SFS could have been taken the wrong way?
[ *] Weaknesses: Test scores are horrible, GPA could be better. Got Bs last year
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Just didn’t stand out enough for the early round. I know it was super competitive, but I almost wish they sent rejections, just so I’d be a little more realistic. It’s absolutely my 1st choice (which I made clear to admissions), so I don’t know how to improve from here. I really don’t want to take more tests, but I could. New recs? New essays?
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b] Maybe I’ll just take a gap year and learn Arabic instead…Congrats to everyone else!

Pick one:
[ size=+2]Decision: Accepted[ /size]
[ b]Objective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 2270/1550 (CR: 800; M: 750; W: 720)
[ *] ACT: 32 (1st time) 35 (2nd time)
[ *] SAT II: US History: 800; Literature: 740
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 15/405
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (4; took in 9th grade); AP Language & Composition (5); AP European History (5)
[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis): None
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB; AP Statistics; Spanish 1 (my old school only had Latin, and my current school doesn’t offer Latin); Introduction to Africa (taken at UW-Madison); AP Calc BC; AP Literature, AP Environmental Science; Anatomy & Physiology
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Gold Medalist, National Latin Exam

[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Cross-Country (9-10, co-captain (9); captain (10)), Assistant Archivist at my school’s archives and history museum, Independent Study of US & British History, Physics Club (Founding Member), nothing too important.
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Babysitting
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Quite a lot (~600 hours), mostly at my church and a local food pantry.
[ *] Summer Activities: Took a 5 credit calculus class at a technical college (12), National Student Leadership Conference about Intelligence & National Security at American University (11, earned 2 college credits), volunteered with political campaign (12), Cross-Country (9 &10).
[ *] Essays: In the personal statement, I talked about how our culture’s notions of masculinity contributed to the eating disorder I struggled with from sixth through tenth grade. I thought this was risky, but it apparently worked. In the “Why Georgetown” essay, I talked about the political science department, the first-year seminars, and the student clubs and organizations. I discussed how I loved that Georgetown had the Jesuit commitment to social justice and free inquiry, thus uniting the best parts of Catholicism with the spirit of the Enlightenment, and compared this to the Catholic school I attended in 9th & 10th grade, which refused to ever question dogma, etc. I think I really showed I loved and had researched the school. In the activity essay, I talked about my love of history since a very young age led to my interest in politics, and talked about my involvement in a political campaign that my family and close friends didn’t support and what I learned.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: Wonderful; I had my 9th and 10th grade Religion teacher write one (She apparently compared me to Cicero)
[ *] Counselor Rec: Probably not the best, my counselor has about 500 students and doesn’t know that much about me.
[ *] Additional Rec: Pre-Calculus teacher, good, but not stellar.
[ *] Interview: Very good. We talked a lot about politics and my experiences as a student at a small Catholic school and the large public school to which I transferred.

[ /list][ b]Other[ /b][ list]
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[ *] Intended Major: Political Science (or perhaps International Relations) and International Health
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): Wisconsin
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket:~$100,000
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: Test scores, grades, rigor of curriculum, essays. EDIT: Oh, and the dual-enrollment classes I took at UW-Madison.
[ *] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars, wasn’t able to take Latin IV & V because the school I now attend doesn’t offer Latin.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See strengths. I also think I showed I was different than other applicants in the essays and interview (especially through my experiences at the two very different schools I attended.)
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b]
I am so ecstatic to have been accepted! Congratulations to everyone else who was accepted, and to those who were deferred, there is still a chance.
Hoya Saxa!
P.S. Don’t be afraid to take a risk or leave your comfort zone in the essays. I think any admissions committee wants to really know who you are and what experiences shaped your character and world-view. But if you take a risk, be sure to write eloquently and don’t have a “woe-is-me” attitude.

I know you’re probably upset right now but please please please don’t give up hope. I was deferred, and then waitlisted last year (talk about prolonged torture ><), but I’m a freshman in the SFS now, so I promise that miracles really can happen.
