@suzievt , they were notified in December , either EA or ED…and also have other apps they are waiting ro hear from.
One of her friends only applied RD for all of her schools so she hasn’t head from every school yet
lje62…thanks for explaining.
I understand those who heard via EA or rolling, but not ED. If one applies ED, then it is a commitment to attend and they are supposed to withdraw all outstanding apps. You had mentioned having to decide between Yale and Penn which baffles me. I think Yale is SCEA (Single Choice Early Action…meaning you can only put in one EA app, but it is not a commitment to attend) and Penn is ED, and you can only apply to one school ED and it is binding to attend if admitted ED. (I have a daughter who did SCEA to Yale and was deferred and was admitted RD to Penn)
I don’t know what the individual school’s policies are as my child didn’t apply…her friends did. I could call the parents and confirm
My daughter didn’t apply to any Ivies…she is nowhere near the rank of her closest friends. The point is, her friends have been admitted to various schools from very selective Ivies to schools such as Monmouth , TCNJ , Duke, NEU…and yes, Princeton and Yale.
Again, it is NOT my child with regard to UPenn and Princeton , and her schools she is waiting still to hear from…
She has been denied at NEU , wait listed at RIT/NTID , accepted to UNH Manchester, University of Southern Maine . She is waiting to hear from BU , American , Towson and once her app is complete, Gallaudet
I understand. There are many schools that offer EA, ED, and Rolling Admissions. And so some kids have heard from schools and some even know where they are going next year. But it is still perfectly normal to have not have heard from a great many schools because many don’t send out RD notification until late March or April 1, which was the case with my non-MT daughter and actually with a majority of the schools on my MT’s list too.
What field is your D pursuing, lje62? I am curious particularly with the app to Gallaudet in there. My sister-in-law used to be a professor at Gallaudet.
She wants to be an ASL interpreter. Two of the schools ( BU and Towson ) are not really geared towards that path , but there are not that many programs that offer that , at least on the east coast. She may have to start out in a deaf studies major and transfer , but we hope that doesn’t happen. She really liked NEU the best but she got denied ( her sister is an alum ) All of the programs are really, really small. RIT would have been awesome…she might stay on the wait list there , but we know it isn’t likely that she will get off of it. Financially , hands down the best, plus they have one of the biggest deaf populations in the country in Rochester
Thanks for sharing. Definitely put in at Gallaudet!
Fingers crossed for your daughter!
@lje62 My daughter is majoring in MT and minoring in ASL at Western Kentucky. While there is not a large deaf community in Bowling Green, whenever she is not in a production, she plans to interpret for one of the performances to get practice. The faculty is very supportive of this.
^^ I am not positive , but I think one of the girls from her HS that graduated last year studies ASL there…she was in the video my daughter produced
@lje62, my niece is a recent Gallaudet graduate; she also went to boarding school there (MSSD) and is working there now as an on-call classroom and res life substitute. She was hired to direct the fall play at the high school (double majored in theater and photography and has worked at some summer drama programs for deaf students). She chose Gallaudet over RIT, by the way. Happy to ask her any questions if your daughter needs specifics from a recent student. (She has been profoundly deaf since birth.)
Re: the Yale-vs-Penn quandary, Soozie is correct, as far as I know, that Yale is still single-choice early action, and Penn has not yet released RD admissions, but they have sent some “likely letters”–maybe that’s the situation with your daughter’s friend.
Haha ! I have seen more input about Gallaudet in this thread than anywhere else on CC. I know some of her concerns about GU is the reputation is has for the intolerance of some of the deaf students against hearing students. She witnessed it when she was there for a field trip for her ASL National Honor Society last year. When we visited BU’s program during an open house event, she talked quite a bit with a student who was doing her " semester abroad " at Gallaudet. Coincidentally, this girl was in the dining hall while my daughter’s group was having lunch. There were some deaf students sitting behind her , mocking her…not what I would expect from college age students , but I guess it happens.
She does however, love DC and the campus seems really lovely.
We will see…they have an open house the day our European guests leave. If she gets in , we will make the trip
Anyone know how many people are wait listed typically for schools? Just got the letter today from UNC, but didn’t say how many people were on it. Thanks!
When I called admissions, I was told 10 for the major my daughter applied to…and her place on the list is 2. They take a very small number of students for that particular major, so maybe try to contact the admissions to see if they can give you specifics ?
@lje62 – is your D involved with musical theatre at all? Just curious. You are actually on the musical theatre forum. You are welcome to share, of course, and maybe I am the one who is confused, but sounds like your D is pursuing another major?
S received a No from Belmont today. However he is still a happy kid! He only auditioned at six schools and he has an acceptance from one of his top choices and a “short list” status from another top choice and one more still left to hear from. We are feeling blessed and thankful this part of the process is almost over and sending out happy thoughts for good news to all who are still waiting! and BAL to all who have auditions still to go!
I did not have “clearance” from my D to share until yesterday for acceptances or rejections. But she finally is past the point of caring. No so far from Penn State, CCM, Ithaca, “redirect” from Rider to the BA program (thanks, but no thanks) and finally a no from Michigan this morning. She has 2 acceptances so far from terrific programs (Hartt and UArts) and a wait list at her #1 choice (BW).and 2 schools left to hear from (Syracuse and NYU Steinhardt). Well, 3 if you count Pace. We haven’t heard so we are assuming it is a no and that we will be getting that letter this week so I can officially put it in the No column. Because of the wait list, we will still be biting nails here for a while. I am thankful for the acceptances so far as they do make the waiting easier. Hoping for good news for all!!
We were so naive in this whole process. D only auditioned to a few schools and so far she has received denials. There are a few left but she has given up hope. She is so far on the spectrum of hope from when she first received audition invites to all the schools she submitted her taped prescreens. She asked if I would sleep with her the other night so I held her until she cried herself to sleep. I have not broken down until yesterday and have not recovered. i share this with all of you partly because I hope it will help me and partly in hopes that I can help someone in our shoes. So now the daily question from her is why would God allow her to go down this road when He knew I was not good enough?
@wozmom … ugh on Belmont. But yay for those other two! (And who knows … our kids may end up at the same school yet!)
@carltonism … while D has never questioned her performing arts path, she has questioned why God made her love it so much if it was going to be this tough. So I COMPLETELY know where you’re coming from. And I made some mistakes as well in this whole process - but literally just scheduled 4 more auditions within the next month. They are definitely out there! Western Carolina has auditions 3/21 & 4/18 and Northern Kentucky on 4/4. I think it was @Emsdad who has a really good list of schools that are still auditioning.
@Carltonism It broke my heart to read your post. I have cried, more than once during this process. As a parent we want to see them get what their hearts desire when we know how extremely talented and passionate they are. It is hard for a teenager to see that there are many paths and that the right one will open up for them. Just keep being there for her and it will work out. Maybe not in the way that she planned, but it will work out. When I had my mini “Michigan calls went out and D didn’t get one” meltdown the other night, my husband (who has been largely on the outskirts of all of this) talked me off the ledge. He told me that even when we think we know what we want, and put all our energy into it, sometimes a higher power (insert personal belief system here) knows what road we need to take better than we do, so we have to trust in that and not try to steer the ship too much, but rather let it float on the currents on it’s own. It easy advice to give and tough advice to take, to be sure, but it did help me let go of the anxiety for at least a little while.
I hope you and your daughter get some good news soon. She is good enough. She is uniquely her, and that is the most important and valuable thing of all.
@Carltonism - can you get her to read these threads - especially this one & the venting one? So many really talented kids get multiple no’s (in fact, most of them do!). It’s the rare few who get multiple acceptances. It only takes one, and you still have time to schedule more auditions (several posted above). There are a lot of parents & kids on here with wonderful stories of late auditions/acceptances & they are thriving - you and she are not alone! Editing to add - reading this breaks my heart too!!!
YES @carltonism … have her read this thread or read them to her!! I’ve done EXACTLY that for my D so she doesn’t feel so all alone.
