Wishing you much luck!!!
While it is not illegal so to speak, no school should require a deposit to hold a spot in the freshman class prior to May 1 (even if it is refundable…imagine all the deposits you’d have to pony up if all schools did this). It is against the rules of the National Association of College Admissions Counseling. You are supposed to have until May 1 to commit to a college and not have your spot given away to another student before May 1 (unless you have declined the offer). Schools who require a deposit to hold a spot (and i am not talking of a housing deposit) are not following the rules. Further, it is highly unusual to have to hold a spot with a deposit if you are on a wait list but have yet to be offered admission. Make sure to know your rights with NACAC and if needed, discuss with a college who is not abiding by those rights.
I had to pay a deposit at Cal State Fullerton which is my daughter’s MT safety (if you can call it that…but at least she’s in there!) Housing opened 3/2 and they have very little on campus housing. In order to register for housing I had to pay a deposit and basically accept her spot. The housing deposit is refundable if we pull out. The “spot” deposit is not. I am not happy doing this but don’t want her to end up without on campus housing as a freshman. So technically I could have waiting till 5/1 to notify but by then we would have been apartment hunting. Just hedging our bets if the schools we’re waiting on say no or if she doesn’t come off the waitlist she’s on.
The whole “saving a spot for housing” issue is common at many public universities, unfortunately. But so many other schools don’t even assign housing until way past May 1 and people have already committed to enroll and everyone is assigned housing at ONE time.
Funny that my daughter received a rejection from her non-audition safety school today – bye, bye UC Irvine! Not heartbroken because it wasn’t in the mix anymore, but just seemed curious. The University of California is getting more and more competitive. Also wondering if the major is impacted because they have so many applications for theatre. As we say around here, “Onward!”
@4461flmom Was the PPU audition on campus? What was it like? and congrats!!
I think many schools tell you that if you commit early you will have a better chance to get the housing you want. It is an inducement but I don’t see anything illegal or even wrong about it. Housing is a commodity, you want it you commit early. I know lots of people MT and other who send in the housing deposit even if they are not 100% sure for just the reason mentioned above.
My D auditioned in NYC at Unifieds. They were so kind and accommodating. Sorry I can’t help you more.
And thank you. Wishing you all the best! @destiny95
@destiny95 my D will be auditioning there this coming weekend. Last one for her! Glad it will be over, but I have enjoyed our travels together!
@tramsmom I received it on March 23rd. So, Monday!
Haven’t even heard from Steven’s Point…interesting @4461flmom
Yay @MTRaleighmom it’s our last travel as well. I hope it goes great for both of you.
@MTKristine12 If you haven’t heard from them yet, you should call. Mark made it pretty clear they’d make decisions last week.
One of our students hadn’t heard from Steven’s Point either but when she called she was told she would not hear until next week.
Is anyone else still waiting on Pace?
Rejected from CMU. Yay!!!
No from Syracuse, waitlist from Steinhart.
Us too @destiny95. You are in good company. Sending our deposit for Point Park on Monday!!!
