Class of 2020 National Merit Discussion

My son took it on Oct 13, which was the Saturday test date (were there 3 days?). His entire school took it that day as well as a few neighboring schools I know of. I’m not sure how all the different dates play into it, but his SI is 221 and last years cutoff was 220, so I’m just hoping we don’t have a 2-point jump!

Quick CA update - DSs20 (Twins) have become semifinalists <=224. i.e.,

CA <=224

Double congrats. Hope CA, MA and NJ doesn’t go beyond last year as I am on the Bubble.

Mass can’t go to 225, so nothing to stress about. Now my daughter with the 222, on the other hand… lol. Here’s hoping!

Thanks for posting! My index is 220 in Ohio and I was on pins and needles waiting for results to come out. Super excited for the press release!

@Cheeringsection Has anyone else at your daughter’s school heard yet?

Yay! With CA at <=224, that makes it official my dd20 qualified with a 226. Still hoping the cutoff is actually 223 or below, though, for my dd21.

@collegekid2024 She has been told she is the only NMSF at her school and not to discuss it with anyone else until next week.

Compass says, “Just received a report from a student in California qualifying with a 222. (5:30 PM PDT).”

Woohoo!!!

So if TX goes up a point they will be equal to CA. That would surprise me so I’m still holding out hope that TX stays at 221. At this point I really just want to know one way or the other!

@BMC9670 , hoping you @Mypooronly kids make the NMSF!!! My D will be taking the PSAT Oct 16th (hs jr), we are also looking at UF and UCF among others. Can you please post about UF and UCF. Have you toured? We have NOT. Don’t want to put the cart before the horse. PM me if you please his stats. It will be helpful for me. Thanks.

New to this thread but have been reading for a while, I’m in NC and got a 222 for the score index, and last on this thread an NC girl qualified with a 221, so that means I should be qualifying as a semifinalist correct? When will I officially find out? My school hasn’t contacted me or told me anything about it yet.

Nothing is official until you actually hear from your counselor, but given someone from NC is reporting a 221 score qualified, and assuming that report is trustworthy, you have qualified!

I’m feeling the same way about IL. Seems like IL, TX and NY have always been a point or two behind CA, so would be strange if these states increased to the CA level???

You and me both. My kid has 221 in TX and is insisting the cutoff is 222. Where he heard that, I don’t know (and he’s too cranky to ask). So here I am in hopes of something approaching clarity…

Does anyone know the cut-off for NMSF for SC?

From Art’s website:
“We have confirmation of the first state to see a lower cutoff this year. Colorado’s cutoff will be no higher than a 220.”
DS is sitting on 220. Finders crossed!

@FlorenceV - do you think he got that just from reading Art’s blog? He had 2 reports from the weekend of kids making SF in Tx with 222, but that doesn’t mean that 221 is out. Hoping to hear more from Texas tomorrow. There are a lot of NMSFs in/near Dallas, and you’d think they’d be getting news even if the notices hadn’t made it to Central Texas yet.

Hi- anyone else here from Oregon waiting for some news? Just want some company:)
