What does “confirmed” mean? How does Art verify the accuracy of his information?
@3scoutsmom , shake hands. Thank you for this great thread. My DD is not competing for nmsf fellowship, but it is a great honor to be top 1%.
So long!
@curiousme2
From Art’s blog:
"The information comes from a mix of reports and sources. If I have a reliable source, I will mark the information as “confirmed.” Otherwise I’ve tried to list the number of reports received at a particular score level. I’ve been fortunate to find that student reports are very reliable. "
My daughter finally received the letter from GC yesterday. All my school admin friends didn’t confirm or deny my questions about the letter past couple of days so I had a feeling they had it. The letter clearly says “this information is confidential until 9/11 except your family and your school principal.”
We are Dallas TX area.
@rileygrl University of Alabama gives the Presidential Scholarship for semi and a full ride for finalist. Never heard anything about flying in for a visit for free though. Good luck!
Why, college2024mom?
So the letter is actually to the student then? I always assumed the letter read that the principal couldn’t share the info with the student until the publication date.
I just wish the school will give my son the letter or at least confirm he’s in. He’s at 225 so I’m not too worried but the confirmation would be nice.
@amsunshine My daughter is keen of UT Austin honor college. I thought they did not offer scholarship for NMSF. Maybe I am wrong? We are in greater Houston area.
I’m not sure about UT Austin but there are other scholarships such as the corporate scholarships and the one awarded directly through NM corp.
I don’t think UT Austin gives much in merit aid. I don’t think they give anything for NMF.
@carmartwinmom I think The principal/High school received a package with all Semi Finalists, and the counselor distributed it. The letter was a printout 1 page sheet with temporary login info. Not an actual letter with thicker stock. As someone mentioned before, the counselor might have to put in the names to generate the temporary login. It could’ve been printed out at our school.
That may be the case, but I just wanted to make sure college2024mom knew that there are may be other scholarships available to her child through national merit, and not completing the process is probably not a good idea.
@amsunshine Many thanks for your suggestions. Hope more schools will weigh this prestigious recognition.
When the press release is released, does it include names? The only ones I can find online (for past dates) do not include names.
Here’s the 2018 with no names:

For parents like me who’ve been watching for news from Washington state, a comment on Art’s blog has been posted indicating a student with a 221 is semifinalist in WA.
Sometimes local new media sites display the database by area. Example in NYS: https://www.bizjournals.com/buffalo/news/2018/09/12/nationalmerit2019.html
We’re in that boat. 224, but we’d feel so much better if they’d give out the letters. Our principal takes the “confidentiality until public announcement day” more seriously than most I think.
Anyone has semifinalist cutoff score information for CA for class 2020? My daughter is having 223, right on the edge. Thx.
So far, three students have reported that 222 qualified. Congratulations!
Edited to add: Actually, on Art’s blog, he says 222 is now confirmed for CA and the rest of the cutoffs are also confirmed.
