I love the idea of a brag thread as a few months ago, I had those fears every mother has, will my children get into college at all? Congrats to the above acceptances!
This is my first time helping my children go through the college process. I have female twins who want completely different colleges, so I’ve learned about direct admit nursing, and LAC. Needless to say, My direct entry nursing twin applied to many colleges because we heard it’s tough to get into nursing programs. Surprisingly she was admitted to U of Portland, College of St. Benedict, Penn State, Quinnipiac, Fairfield and UMass, many with really good scholarships. Because we didn’t know if she would get in anyplace, she applied for pre-nursing to U of Alabama, U of Arizona and Birmingham Southern which she also received acceptances. I’m happy if we stopped here, but she has a handful more outstanding applications with two far reaches.
My other twin daughter was set on LAC, many from the CTCL. She only applied to six schools, but received acceptance to her first choice, Mills College, Clark U, Beloit, and Knox with fantastic scholarships. She applied regular decision as a far reach to Pitzer, and to her first love, Mount Holyoke. However, she prefers Mills because it’s closer to home, only 45 minute plane ride, 4-5 hour drive as opposed to a full day of travel. She also really liked the racial and ethnic diversity of Mills College (she is pursuing a career in social justice/sociology).
Now we will need to figure out which colleges to visit for twin1, ugh! I guess it’s better to have that problem than not to have any visits to worry about! Just so relieved and happy that my daughters are pursing their dreams.
@netter11 congrats! Those are great results! I too had fears – everything seems so unpredicatble. As I’ve said before, it is really nice to get notices of acceptances from rolling admissions schools early (or EA for those who went that route) in the game. Really takes the pressure off.
@netter11 Congrats to your daughters. We visited both UofPortland and UMass last year. UofPortland is a lovely campus with a great vibe and a perfectly sized campus. It’s location on a bluff overlooking the Willamette River is great and it’s library and fitness facilities were quite impressive. My D accepted there as well.
UMass is one seriously large campus. I LOL to imagine my CA girl getting herself from one end to the other for some 8:00a class in the middle of a blizzard…but more power to her for her spirit of adventure. She is still awaiting her EA notification; bit of an inefficient process over there. The local towns of Amherst and Northhampton can’t be beat for a quintessential college experience.
Oh thank you so much @SacramentoSusan about the review of U of P, we hope to visit during admitted student weekend! Is your daughter looking at nursing schools as well? Thank you too @mstee it definitely takes the pressure off.
@Jdjd3kids My suggestion is to make a spreadsheet with as little optimism as possible. Add in 3-5% cost increases each year. Watch out for changes in the EFC when the number of kids in college changes. Figure in real transportation costs. Map out how each year will get paid for. Student will borrow x. Needs to earn y. Parents need to chip in or borrow x. Seeing it all laid out can go a long way to helping everyone see the cost difference between schools, and get everyone thinking about whether it’s worth it (to spend more) and what the family might do with the saved money (opportunity cost!). These are big numbers. Savings can go towards grad school or professional school, helping a kid get started in life (car, downpayment), seed money for a business, or securing your own financial future (so as not to burden our children down the line). Good luck!
So proud to announce my son has been accepted to Clemson, Auburn, UGA & Ga Tech! He’s going to GaTech!!! WooHoo!! He worked so very hard to find balance between academics, athletics, family, faith & fun. We’re Ga residents so he’s earned both the Hope and Zell Miller scholarships, and maybe more thru Tech. We put so much of ourselves into our children and they have no idea the amount of joy and love that fills our hearts when we see them accomplish their goals. Proud momma here!
Hi everyone,
My DD has been accepted to Colorado School of Mines, University of Colorado and her reach school, Stanford. We are still waiting on RD schools. However, I cannot imagine her choosing anything over Stanford. That said, that nasty $65k sticker price may come into play. Congrats to all parents! We work hard too supporting and guiding our kids.
Congrats @frenchtoastlover and @cardinal2020mom! A lot of celebrating is happening at the Parents of the Class of 2016 list under the Class of 20xx in the Parents’ Forum. Please join us! We have a student or two there too, French Toast, so if you plan to cook breakfast, you’re certainly welcome!
Congratulations @frenchtoastlover and @cardinal2020mom for the wonderful result. My D16 got in a couple of safeties and Yale(SCEA). She is so into Yale that it will be hard to persuade her otherwise after the RD – she finished apps way before the EA results that we will be waiting for the results from over a dozen RD schools in March.
@EastGrad@dadofs Thank you both for the kind words! I will definitely check in to the Class of 2016 thread (and I’d make you all french toast if I could meet you all in real life!). Yale is definitely still my top choice, but I’m waiting until admitted students weekends to revisit some of my top choices. And good luck to your daughter in her college admissions! Sorry that I addressed this paragraph to both of you haha.
@frenchtoastlover congrats to you!!! It never ceases to amaze me all the work you guys put into schools. I wouldn’t be able to get into cc if I had to do it all over again.
Accepted into the colleges ive applied to! Texas A&M (Biomedical Engineering), UT Austin (Biomedical Engineering), and Texas Tech (Economics). Time to let the senioritis hit and take it easy for the rest of the year cheers!!!
