So for Pace, BFA, the app is ready to go in, should I just do Early Action? Any downside to this? It says all decisions are due May 1st. On the other hand, I guess I can just do Rolling, and what would be the difference?
Pace will do academic admit early but you won’t find out about BFA until all decisions are made (feb or March).
Not sure it makes a difference.
@FourStars pretty sure the Pace EA is an academic decision only for MT and Acting. Pace is pretty quick with the academic decisions (and will keep reaching out to your student, regardless of the artistic decision!). Not sure it hurts to get EA for the academic decision but you will be waiting on artistic nonetheless.
Elon is another one where you can submit a prescreen without applying.
@jbtcat @sopranomtmom and others… Can you share a little more about which Acting programs allow for voice/dance training, and participation in MT shows, and conversely any that really do NOT? Her list is fairly set, but we will try to take that into account as we make any changes. Her list is pretty top heavy, (meaning the really hard to get into Acting programs), so we are trying to find a few more schools.
@FourStars , University of the Arts allows acting majors to take voice and dance lessons. We spoke to them at a performing arts college fair, and loved how flexible they were (they said students in any major can take classes in any other major, even visual arts!)
@FourStars As mentioned above, UArts is definitely one program that has a lot of crossover opportunities. Another that my daughter strongly considered was Wright State. Their ATs and MTs take voice and dance all four years and both are cast in Musicals and Plays. OCU has some MT opportunities for it’s AT majors, and I remember at Shenendoah they mentioned the ATs have an opportunity to sign up for private voice lessons and also audition for Musicals. Others you might look at that might have crossover possibilities - Syracuse, Viterbo, Otterbein and Roosevelt. My daughter is MT at Hartt and I know the ATs can sign up for private voice lessons at an additional cost and also take dance classes at their Community program, but I’m not sure if there is much crossover in casting of the shows. The best thing to do is really compare the AT and MT curriculum at the schools you are considering and then ask about casting and supplemental voice/dance opportunities.
Ton of crossover at Coastal Carolina between AT, MT and PT.
Otterbein has crossover opportunities.
@FourStars because of the studio system at NYU there isn’t any crossover between studios during the first 2 years of primary training. However, all of the students can audition for the Stageworks productions put on by Tisch which include musicals. I’m not sure about the possibility of taking vocal classes but my daughter did take private vocal lessons through Steinhardt.
@FourStars UNCSA is a “straight” drama program but it is very physical in nature and both dance and voice are taken each year as part of the curriculum. Can also take additional private voice lessons and audit dance classes in the dance conservatory. Many “MT” kids go there and appear happy. We know several who turned down top MT offers to attend UNCSA. They also do musicals but not sure if that is annual or not. May want to ask the school if interested.
Thank you everyone! Does anyone remember doing Pace Prescreen for Acting? In addition to two contrasting monologues, there is one Wild Card optional. What do people submit? My D has considered using her Shakespeare piece (it’s good, a strength of hers), since Pace pieces are both contemporary. Or maybe a film monologue or scene? All input or recollections welcomed!
@FourStars - I would say a wild card would be more something that you love… but couldn’t really play (gender, age, ethnicity etc) Minn Guthrie has that as one of their requirements- it was super fun for D to think about/prepare
@FourStars They encourage you to “be creative”. My daughter chose to do a monologue/story using American Sign Language. (I put in subtitles.) She got positive feedback on that.
Hi! You guys are a year ahead of us, mostly with kids in BFA/BA programs, so you are not hanging on every word like we are, but I just wanted to say first two auditions at Syracuse and Marymount both went well! Feeling much more relieved, still have a loong way to go, but my D was so ready to audition and move into that phase instead of the application grind!
@FourStars Since you’ve been posting on this “old” thread, I wondered if you knew there are new ones for the class of 2022? The MT one is called: Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing and the Theatre/Acting one is called Class of 2022 (sharing, discussing, application and audition season)
Glad the first auditions went well! Good Luck on the rest!
Thank you, @daughtersdreams! I am actually on both threads. I mostly post on the new one, but you guys seem pretty friendly and knowledgable! In some cases, we newbies are the blind leading the blind!
So much changes all the time, @FourStars , even those of us who’ve walked through this once or twice, don’t have all the answers. You’re smart to take advantage of all the resources you can!
Hi again! You may know more about this than those of us applying currently…For Ithaca College, please does anyone have information about the relationship between the MT and Acting programs? We can not find any information on the website easily. Heading to Acting audition on Saturday. Thank you!
There’s a lot of crossover, according to parents with kids at both programs. I believe they sometimes cast acting majors in musicals and vice versa, and acting majors get a certain amount of vocal/dance training.
