I am waiting to hear from Texas Lutheran, however my stats are high compared to their other students so I am a shoe in there. I am also finishing up a Trinity application, and looking to apply to a couple more before making a decision.
my son is a junior and that’s a school on his list can you please share act scores and grades for Tulane…did you need writing on act or subject tests?? thanks!!!
@CA1543 head over to the Stanford boards. There are a lot of tips and also a list of who got in and who was deferred/denied admission so you can look at stats. We just got our “big envelope” in the mail and registered her for the local alumni party in January. All too real all of a sudden! Congrats to everyone who is hearing back with good news! This was THE most stressful last 3-4 months of my DD’s life for sure. SO glad it’s over.
@xaviermom2017 Yes, we live in CT and I think I can guess which schools your kids go to!!! Mine goes a little “Northwest” of you… LOL. Not sure about CC curriculum. My son also went to catholic HS and he crushed his SATs. But, since he went to Art School, they didn’t really matter much anyway! My D has always been a bad standardized test taker. She went to public school from K - 4 and the CMTs were not her friend. Then she went to a catholic school from 5-8 and did somewhat better on their testing. She took PSATs, Old SAT, New SAT and ACT. Generally the results were fairly consistent. We ultimately opted for the ACT because of the changes to the SAT and we felt a prep course would help her. Since the SAT was brand new, the prep courses were still in their first phase of their programs. We also heard that the ACT tended to favor kids who get good grades but don’t always test well on standardized tests. (Not sure if that is true or just a myth.) She did took the ACT 3 times and the new SAT once. Her new SAT score was roughly equivalent on that index they do to her ACT scores. So, do I think it was a CC issue for her? Not sure.
I also saw your post looking for info on SAT/ACT preparation. We did a private tutor for our D because her sports schedule was insane and we needed ultimate flexibility. I would NOT do it again. While I have to say her Math tutor was quite good and boosted her ACT a couple of points, her English/Writing scores both went down after tutoring. TWICE!! Her best scores were her first “cold” test. After tutoring, her English score dropped a point or two and her writing score TANKED. We had seen warning signs of this with the practice tests and I tried to work with the tutoring company - but I got nowhere. We spent A LOT of money for very little result. My D did over 30 hours of tutoring and completed all of her “homework”. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. If I had to do it over again, I would have her do self study (she is disciplined enough to have done the online part herself, if I reminded her and told her she needed to do x hours a week) and I would have had her take the test on every sitting. Most schools don’t superscore the ACT which is a bummer. That would have boosted her at least a point or two.
Good luck with the ACT/SAT process. Fortunately more schools are now “test optional”. I am sure my D would have been accepted at Providence College (they are test optional) but they didn’t offer her major. The only test optional school on her list was Ithaca College.
@Hangdog thanks for the insight! I too, spent a little money on a private tutor for my son after his first SAT and he did worse too!!! I was also not pleased with the results!! My daughter has decided on self-prep for the test in March. As far as the Catholic Schools and CC - some schools adopted the CC curriculum. Our grammar did not but my daughter’s HS did and she tested ok on the PSATs so I’m hoping for better results with her SATs. My son is not looking for high tier college acceptance. He favors the publics and is most interested in UVM, UNH and a few down south. He has been accepted into UNH and UVM so the stress of this whole process has been relieved Still waiting for NCS and Maryland (definitely a reach) and then VATech - all three of which are going to be a challenge in terms of acceptance given his stats at this point but it’s worth a shot! My daughter has higher expectations so I’m really hoping she comes out higher on the SAT/ACT. It’s a shame these schools weigh so heavily on one type of exam. I am a professor in residence at a University here in CT and can personally attest to the preparedness of the kids graduating from the Cath private schools in this state. They have been in my pre-law classes and most definitely stand out in terms of maturity, presentation and academic ability in the classroom. I wouldn’t change a thing Good luck to your kids!!! Enjoy the cold over the next day or so!
My son received his early decision acceptance to Stevens Institute of Technology! Stevens has been his dream school since sophomore year and he refused to even visit another campus unless he didn’t get in (so you can imagine how relieved I am that he did, on top of being incredibly proud!) He is over the moon!
Daughter got a full-tuition scholarship to University of Pittsburgh, accepted into Honors for Communications Science and Disorders for Undergrad and also was accepted to the Guaranteed Admission Program for Masters in Speech Pathology and Audiology. In undergrad she also wants to work toward a minor in Linguistics and an ASL Certificate. Full-tuition for her program is valued at $130,000. She’s been invited to apply for their Chancellor’s full-ride+ scholarship and will have to wait a few months to see if she gets the invite to interview in February. Either way we’re delighted.
This whole process has been very exciting and stressful. Of those she applied to, Pitt is her top choice because of the program and she loves the school. She stayed there for a week for a leadership conference the week before their applications opened this past July. It was a great chance to get a feel for the college. Pitt does rolling admissions so she has known since September that she was admitted and since Thanksgiving that she has the scholarship. I’m very grateful to Pitt for getting that information out early. DD was 1/405, 35 ACT, NMSF, 3.4 GPA, worthwhile extra-curr, many APs.
DD has a best friend who got into Pitt early as well but is still waiting on merit scholarship info. She’s got a great list of stats and extra-curr a mile long, but with a 33 ACT the wait and worry are longer and harder. They seem to be sending scholarship invites down that ACT ladder so many of those with 36, 35 and 34 have been sent out already. (Per the Pitt thread on CC) Historically they also give merit to those with a 33 ACT. We’re stressing with her. Pitt is very expensive for an OOS student.
I hope EVERYONE gets into their dream school and can afford to attend!!
My DD has been accepted to Tulane as a Presidential Scholar with $32k/year and invite to Honors College. She applied for the Paul Tulane Scholarship so we’re waiting to find out about that. She was also accepted at Howard and we’re waiting to see if she got the Presidential Scholarship (full ride+books+laptop).
