I too have been reading posts and following the journey of others for about a year. It’s comforting for me to share the journey with all of you. I really feel much more prepared because of the wealth of information shared on this forum. My D will apply to colleges as an Acting BFA (primarily), she also sings and has been on the fence about double majoring and found two VP programs she likes.
Is there a list of schools that have a “cut” program? I have read that some schools will accept you in MT and then cut you. Can anyone comment on this. I want to steer clear of those schools.
On a happy note, d got her packet from Wagner for the Summer Musical Theatre Institute. Starting to feel real!
@Mel2421 I believe Millikin is one of those with a cut program…
@Mel2421 - Here are a couple of recent discussions regarding cut programs:

Hello everyone, just made an account yesterday on CC. Currently am a junior (male) looking at a BFA program to study. my #1 choice is FSU due to cost (florida pre-paid) and always wanted to go there. Any advice on basic auction prep, mainly in the area of dance. I have been taking ballet for 2 months now ( I know, I know, Im behind) but would consider vocals in the superior area. Acting is strong but will be training with a coach from now until audition season. Would appreciate any advice with audition prep/ or a list of comparable schools. I will be attending FSU’s Summer Intensive for most of July and hopefully will have my audition work ready by then.
@garrettbroadway Good luck on your upcoming auditions!
It sounds like you’ve got a good plan for training and prep this summer. Consider working on other forms of dance in addition to ballet so that you can be ready to learn any line/combo that might get thrown at you during auditions.
My other strong advice is to get a list of schools where you plan to audition and begin planning for them now. As FSU is an audition program there’s always a chance you won’t make it in. (Going to their summer intensive will help, but there’s never a Sure Thing.) General advice is to audition at 8-12 schools to “guarantee” you get accepted to at least one program.
Your summer intensive will hopefully work with you on specifics, but a few things I’ve learned over the past several months of research:
- Have your audition book ready. This includes marked music for several solos you are fully confident in (full, 32-bar and 16-bat cuts) of varying styles. Make sure to have at least one lyric/“golden age” and one modern/contemporary show song. The scores should be clearly marked for the accompanist to know where to enter/exit for the cut versions.
- Work on a resume listing all of your experience (shows, roles, etc.) and training. There are several good examples on the internet; do some searches and use a format that appeals to you.
- Get a good headshot and have several copies on hand. You don’t need a professional photographer, but there are several good tips to follow. Again, check around here on CC or the internet for tips.
Read the threads pinned at the top of the Musical Theater Major page on CC - there’s a lot of great accumulated knowledge there. Also read the “final decision background” threads for class of 2020 - and maybe classes of 2019 and 2018 as well. Lots of terrific stories of the journeys of those who came before you - what they did right, what they think would do differently if they had a second go-round.
If nothing else, read this one: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/477658-preparing-to-apply-information-for-h-s-juniors-and-seniors-p1.html
Well, we just received awesome news! D will be spending her Senior year attending UNCSA’s High School Drama program. We are in shock, but so excited.
It’s a great program, @owensfolks. Congratulations to your daughter!
Congrats! @owensfolks
Thank you, @GSOMTMom & @Mel2421. I was really prepared for the “plan B” (hiring a coach, voice lessons for the first time since middle school, traveling with her to Unifieds)-but we are positively thrilled.
@owensfolks, the big class field trip is to Chicago Unifieds!! NICE!!!
Congrats @owensfolks I will be interested to hear how she likes it.
Congrats @owensfolks! That is great. My daughter will be a freshman in the BFA program next year. SO excited. I hear the high school program is amazing.
@bfahopeful - YAY! We know a couple kids who are starting in the film school this August, but have never known anyone who’s made it into the Undergrad Drama BFA. How awesome.
For any students on here wondering the Facebook group for auditions for Class of 2021 is up and running. It’s called The Company so any students who care to join are more than welcome. This group is not for parents however.
Yes. I would highly recommend getting your kids to join “The Company”. As MTheatreKid Mentioned, the Facebook group is specifically only for students to support each other during the process. (and few college coaches)
Hey guys, so I’m brand spankin’ new to facebook. (Like, I just made one to join the group) But I’m having a hard time finding it when I search for it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
If you search for The Company in the search bar, it comes up. But again, you must be a student in order to be added to the group. Parents are not allowed on the group.
