Class of 2022 Admissions for students from India

A school in Bangalore got ED 2 CMU, 2 UPENN. Another school got 1 NYU.

One of my friends in Doon School got deferred from Stanford REA, 1 Upenn ED and 1 Cornell ED from my school in Delhi.

That’s got to be impossible. 2 UPenn Ed is just not right. You’d have heard it in the news by now. Plus UPenn have been damn strict like Yale this time and have had record low acceptences this year

Can anyone post stats of the students that got into Stanford or any of the ivy’s? Except sahiti

@justarandomuser0 Your profile is good, but it could be much better. If you had subjects tests and APs, that would be a huge boost to your application. Most colleges are only subject test optional becuase they feel that it may hinder poorer students from applying. If you are financially well-off, lack of APs and Subject Tests is a huge strike against you.

Does anybody here know how many people got deferred from Stanford in REA from India? I’ve heard the number as low as 7-10 to as high as 30-40. Anybody here has a reliable range? I only know of two people that got deferred (Via reddit) - One is from The Doon School, Dehradun and the other is from Delhi Public School, Chandigarh - both of whom from their resume look like superstar applicants with god level ECs, strange that they got deferred.

Your profile is pretty strong! Just a suggestion, try taking the TOEFL test again. The competitive students at the ivies generally have scores higher than 100, matching their respective sub scores. My sister got rejected from an ivy league university because she failed to meet the requirements of TOEFL sub scores.
Otherwise, all the best, mate.

@whizboye Could you send me the link to the actual thread on reddit? I’m really curious to know !

[News from Jaipur]
No ED/EA admits from Ivies except for one UPenn ED confirmed (SEAS).
Yale has been pretty damn strict this year

In delhi, as far as I know there’s been a Duke ED, a Brown ED, a Yale ED, two Upenn ED, two Cornell ED. University of Michigan has been really strict this time, they deferred nearly everybody in India. Do let me know if someone has been admitted to UMichigan.

@Runictable3626 a guy from Bangalore on Reddit got into UMich

Anyone into Caltech from India?

I am just curious… most of the chance me profile have more than 90% in 11th, my D is studying in a very popular CBSE school and they are very strict internal corrections and paper setting and so her overall aggregate for 11th is just 88.7% and she will be in her school top 3 rank if they have a ranking system. Will this hurt her chance? Will colleges be able to normalize based on passed students who have joined them from these institutes? Her 10th grade was full 10 with out any elevation from school.

@UmaSridhar I think the university admissions is aware of the widely varying standards in school grading across schools in India. It helps if the university has historically had a lot of students on a regular basis from a particular school. Even so I doubt they have the resources/time to check back to arrive at a nuanced understanding of the grading system for a specific school. Even if they do, they’d be reluctant to hold that either for or against a current applicant. My sense is that they would only consider common/national exam results (10th & 12th) and ignore the rest. It doesn’t help that CBSE awards 10 CGPA so generously in the 10th Grade. So it will be down to SAT/ACT/SAT Subject Scores to establish your academic credentials, and the essays, ECs & achievements to push you over the bar.

thanks @India2018 the entire admission process is so daunting for me  especially when you get deferred from the only safe school in your list.

@UmaSridhar agree with India2018 response. Also, they get an idea of performance in high school from teacher recommendations. So as long as her recommenders communicate that she is academically strong in high school, that would help. Good luck!
