Class of 2022 Caltech Discussion Thread

Last year my son didn’t receive paper mail from Caltech for RD until close to Prefrosh Weekend. Someone (in the US) told us here that they only received email for EA acceptance, not paper mail. Caltech seems to prefer to use online communication.

@eulerboy Houston, Texas

@eulerboy I stand corrected. My son did receive a letter and a “Welcome to the Class of 2022” brochure just before Christmas. The letter came from the regional admissions officer who read his application. It was very nice and mentioned some things from my son’s essays.

I’m stuck on what to write for the ethical/moral dilemma essay. I haven’t experienced a difficult situation of the moral kind that I can recall. How did some of you approach this essay? It’s my last one left. :-SS

On the Parents forum, there is a thread on a college student finding $$$ in dryer. People commented on times they found phones or jewelry in a store. And turning them in to the manager.

Have u ever known someone to cheat? Have u ever re-gifted a gift?

Just throwing out some suggestions.

@bookworm I thought of Caltech when I saw the dryer $$ thread. I’m sure someone would just post to the group email or whatever chat that they found money in a dryer.

The laundry room is amusing at Caltech. Because of the Honor Code, no one is worried about having their detergent used by someone else. So, they leave their detergent on top of shelves and machines in the room. There are probably 200 detergent bottles/boxes. My son knew where his was, though.

Application deadline is passed, BTW. Good luck to all.

Wait, how is regifting an honor code violation?

Does anyone know about fly-in program for prefrosh weekend? I’ve heard some admits are flown in early by Caltech, any idea?

@brazos21 I think the fly-in programs are for URMs and/or low-income students.

YNotgo, I strive very hard to buy the best gifts I can for the few people that I give to. I receive gifts that are half the price we agreed to, or generic. Once I got a book that had a personal inscription to someone else. Anyway, u r correct, it’s not a moral dilemma

When I visited son, he was in the computer room in his House. Someone left $$$ by their stuff. It felt like a very safe environment.

Honestly I felt I screwed up the moral dilemma question cause I reused my common essay but changed parts of it to include and discuss a moral dilemma. Like parts of it is copied and pasted from my common essay directly…

Somebody else is waiting for the results of RD?

@alluliveforisscience Me! Do you have any idea when they’ll come out? I don’t but, based on past decision dates, I’m thinking March 10th.

Me! I think it’ll be on the 10th too. Less than two weeks!!

@vik0likes0cs I can’t wait until we get official confirmation. I feel like emailing my regional AO but idk. I’ve emailed her already to send updates and don’t want to seem to put there.

@frazzledazzle Ya, I don’t think it’s worth it tbh. A Caltech coach told me to expect the Saturday before MIT so it seems pretty likely. Plus, they gotta tell us soon anyways.

@vik0likes0cs I think that if a coach says that to a recruit (?) I figure that’s what to expect. Thanks! Aaah it’s coming up soon!

What kind of updates did you send? And yeah, I agree, 10th of March :slight_smile:

@alluliveforisscience I updated Caltech on competitions and stuff like that going on right now. For instance I performed the national anthem at a college basketball game, am a finalist in a statewide music performance competition, applied for a paid summer internship and a new honor society at my school, and notified them of my intent to compete at the state science fair (which happens to be after the 10th).

@frazzledazzle how did you send it?

@alluliveforisscience I sent it in an email to my regional admissions officer.
