@Yssej3 I’m sure they’d get along very well! ??
She’s not sure yet what to do, however - she’ll be deciding between four very different routes (bfa Acting, bfa Musical theatre, both of which would be great deals re $) or two highly selective BA Theatre programs which would be great stepping stones to an MFA, one being Oberlin, which costs by far the most of all the options. So, she’s giving herself this spring break to not think about college until she gets back in a week! If she chooses Oberlin we’ll have to talk to FA to see what we can do. I appreciate everyone’s input and advice - thank you!
Thank you for this very helpful information. We applied for/asked to negotiate for more aid from Oberlin and sent them the paperwork from Denison’s more generous offer. We pointed out that Oberlin is pricier, in addition to the difference in merit aid. Seeing your bullet points I wish I’d added a note about our younger son moving to an expensive private school this year because of his dyslexia, an expense we had not anticipated when we started our older son’s college search. I sent everything last week because I was about to leave town and didn’t want it to wait until I returned. They told me to expect a response by mid-April.
I’m glad you found the information helpful. If it were me, I’d contact the financial aid office with the additional information re your youngest. Good luck!
P.S. please ignore the Denison misspelling in my post. I don’t know why autocorrect didn’t flag it considering all the non-typos it normally latches onto
Thank you both, cawmom and tallgal2boys, for this helpful information. We are struggling with DC’s decision here because of the merit scholarship - while Oberlin’s offer is certainly generous, it is a significantly more expensive school to begin with, so comparable merit aid from other schools causes our net price to be far lower elsewhere.
Does anyone know what the maximum merit scholarship amount is that Oberlin awards? We are thinking about appealing for a bit more, but don’t know whether that is completely unrealistic.
I think I know the answer, but if you applied ED and were not offered any aid, fair to say you have no ability to negotiate any aid?
@scup, you’ve hit on one of the downsides of applying ED. It is very difficult, and more likely impossible, to negotiate something you have not been offered. Are you seeking financial aid or merit aid? My understanding is if financial aid is truly necessary to attend, there is a chance for an ED admit. Merit aid, not so much.
Just got offered a spot on the waitlist, but the financial aid is a no-go. Good luck to all you Oberlin people!
Did they offer any financial aid?
Also, did they email you, call you or update your status on the portal. Thanks.
They emailed me. Financial aid was present in the email. @VAParent2019
Also, correction: I was offered a spot OFF the waitlist, not ON the waitlist. Oops. They wanted me to confirm my interest over the phone, and they would admit me.
Thanks @OMPursuit. Best to you.
Hey y’all
Is there any official facebook or whatsapp group for the Oberlin Class of 2023?
There is! If you just search Facebook for “Oberlin 2023” you will find it. You will need to request membership and then they will confirm that you are a new student. It is for students only; parents have a separate group.
