I called the Office of Admissions a couple of days ago and was told that RD decision letters for internationals will be mailed in mid-March, along with an email. However according to the website we'll get the decisions by April 1. Which one should I trust?

The officer you talked to. Always trust the answer from the Admissions person. The info on the website may be outdated, and it could mean that you will for sure receive your decision BY April 1, and not any later.

jennyheart:
but one of my classmates also called the admissions and got the same answer as on the website…

Letters for internationals are usually mailed early, so that all the decisions (for domestic and international students) will arrive around the same time. That could explain some of the difference.

but don’t they email you your decision the second the letter is delivered?

April 1st is the date by which all decisions are guaranteed to arrive. But sometimes they’re sent earlier than that.

I just received an e-mail from admissions that said that she enjoyed reading my essay and she commented on it. Did everyone else get these? Are they positive?

It probably means nothing and I’m just clinging to it because Oberlin is currently my first choice.

I wouldn’t say it means nothing I’ve been corresponding with my admissions counselor through e-mail because he was curious about something I put on my application and we’ve basically just been e-mailing back and forth since. I think I remember reading about other people having something similar done in ED or last year. I think it’s something Oberlin does if they like something just to connect with you and get a deeper perspective.

Winnethepooh-
This whole thing beats me. They just like toying with our minds.

All of the private colleges I’ve applied to seem to have an April 1 Notification date. That makes me crazy… We have only a month to visit a bunch of places and decide??

One month, Jennyheart. Didn’t you visit the colleges last summer and fall before deciding which ones to apply to?

I think most people visited the colleges they were considering first–before applying. My daughter and I piled up thousands of miles driving around to colleges last summer and fall. The first eight schools she applied to she visited first. She later added three additional schools but has not had the time to visit them yet. But they’re super reaches that she is unlikely to get into anyway.

As a German International Student I am not able to visit any of the colleges Im applying to at all. I have to trust the information on the website and the image the colleges giving me through emails and leaflets…it is gonna be hard decision if I get accepted somewhere.

PS. I want that email too in which they are saying that they enjoyed reading my essay!!! :-)

Obligations limited the amount of colleges I had the opportunity to visit. One of the places I was limited from was Oberlin.

Also, I really have no first choice, and thus am taking this very seriously. I don’t want to end up at a place I don’t like. Thus, I will be visiting some colleges twice.

Wow, DerDeutscheMann, you sure you won’t visit your first choice before mailing off the deposit? One of my interviewers wanted to tell me stories of people who never visited her school before attending…

On the other hand, it might make your experience more interesting. ;D

Lots of people decide to attend a college without ever visiting–most international students, for instance. And most of the time it works out fine.

well, if I somehow get the chance to visit it would be great of course…but I dont think thats gonna be possible for me, so yeah…definetly an experience I guess

I got one of those emails too!! whew, I was really excited - Oberlin’s my first choice too. The admissions guy who emailed me said that my application was done, that he really enjoyed my essay (and asked me some questions about it too!), that I should check out the Oberlin blog to find out more about Oberlin life, and that I should relax about the upcoming arrival of Oberlin’s response. Sound pretty positive?!?!? Why would he bother if I had been rejected? :)

you are so in!

@ I’d like jam

That sounds almost like my e-mail!

I hope we both get in! (:

sweeeet!!! I’m so thrilled… I think it’s somewhat safe to say we’re in, though it’s frightening to say that without the acceptance letter in hand. I just got another email from the admissions advisor saying that we’ll have responses before april 1. WHEW! Only 3 more weeks until certainty!

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch, folks.
