Most of the schools my daughter applied to snuck that loan in there on the financial aid page. I guess to make us feel better that they weren’t giving us any aid…“but hey you still have the federal loan to help~” lol
D waiting for a decision. Test optional button disappeared 12 hours ago but then reappeared again. We’re confused on what to make of it.
Is Penn State University RD rolling?? I sent my application on 10th jan and self-reported my scores on 17th jan. Haven’t heard back as yet
Just got my PSU aid. Looks like I will be paying $180,000 for college through a 30 year loan
Do you think PSU is worth the money? I can get a free ride to other schools, but for engineering or science, it seems like I need the research environment of University park. I am also hoping to be admitted to SHC. If I am not admitted into SHC, I am thinking it might be more difficult to get research.
DO NOT do it. It’s like trying to swim with an anchor tied to your neck - for 30 years. How do you expect to cross the pool once with that anchor, never mind… do that day, after day, after day, for 30 years – how do you keep from drowning? ? Then imagine you have that anchor and a child…
In addition, you wouldn’t be taking the risk - your parents would – because no one will loan an 18-year old with no income, no collateral, and no life savings, so parents take the loan for their child. You will get the federal loan, $5,500 for freshman year, $27,000 total, $31,000 with interest, which is what a typical college graduate can pay back over 10 years. Your parents would take the loan and the risk - and, if you have younger siblings, you would not only endanger your parents’ house/savings, but also your younger siblings’ ability to go to college.
Just don’t do it to them… especially if you have other choices!
SHC is terrific, but it’s just $5,000 off the total for a year (*4)
It’s not worth it - especially if you have full tuition scholarships elsewhere.
if you apply in January you should hear by March 30.
PSU might be my only option. I guess it is either debt or no education. The community college does not offer my major and I finished most gen eds through dual enrollment.
Didn’t you say you had full ride offers?
If you have DE credits then hopefully it won’t take you 4 years to graduate college maybe? Good luck to you, I wish you all of the best.
1 to a community college without my major. So it really isn’t a great option.
That is the hope! maybe shave a year off PSU and save some money.
PSu doesn’t seamlessly accept CC credit (if you’re a PA resident, PA CC credits transfer seamlessly to PASSHE schools) and anyway Engineering is linear, meaning you can’t really accelerate - you can simply make your workload lighter some semesters.
Assuming you’re a PA resident, you can still apply to Temple (although I’m afraid the deadline for honors has passed, perhaps worth a try if you have Ivy-hopeful stats.) If
NJ resident (or even if not), Rowan is an excellent STEM university, too. Both are still accepting applications.
UAHuntsville, Youngstown State, UToledo, WVU all offer solid merit aid (up to full tuition) for strong stats and are still accepting apps.
It is certainly not worth taking on 180K debt for an undergraduate degree. I can’t imagine that you have no other options for less that 45K per year for engineering. What state are you in? Look at your state schools, even your own flagship may be less than PSU. It’s getting late so you may have to move quickly.
Ohh okay Thank youuuu:)
the 180k figure includes paying interest for thirty years. the actual price per year is less than 45 k.
Ok. Still if you were my kid I would be worried about you taking on that kind of debt. If you are in state I don’t know if any of the PA state schools have engineering. If there is a PSU branch campus near you, you may be able to do a couple years there and save room and board costs before going to UPark
instate tuition, fees, R&B= 41K
if you get SHC=36K
with federal loan= 30.5K
That’s A LOT.
Email Engineering and ask how you can apply for freshman scholarships. Root around the website looking for these freshman scholarships, if they exist.
What can your parents provide, realistically?
Can they spare $500 a month toward your college? Do/Could they receive the American Opportunity Credit?
Yeah my parents are not happy about the debt considering my stats, but are willing to make the leap. I just want to make sure that research is easily accessible and that all the spots don’t get filled by honors college students (I applied to SHC, but it is still up in the air).
There have to be better choices for you, without debt for your parents.
You don’t have to make a decision for now of course - wait till you hear from all the colleges you applied to, apply to a couple more as they may well come in cheaper than PSU, and keep us updated.
