Oceanisle does your award say financial aid? merit? loan?
Sounds like that is a loan. Mine got the provost award and I believe that’s the wording they used
No, this is listed first (above the subsidized and unsubsidized loans). It’s called “General Scholarship” and when you click on the blue dot next to it, it explains the specifics and does say that you must file a FAFSA. We do have demonstrated need with multiple kids in college but we aren’t at the Pell level, so we are very grateful for the award.
It also states:
“… Penn State General Scholarships are awarded to exemplary undergraduate students and are highly competitive due to limited funding. Scholarships are a form of gift aid that does not need to be re-paid.”
Congrats!
If you look at the details the 5500 is the Stafford Loan
Congratulations! Awards are hard to come by at PSU.
My son did very well (we’re shocked). He got the Provost, which is renewable. And he also got 3 different awards from IST (his college) but they don’t say whether or not they’re renewable. I’ll call tomorrow to ask.
Renewability is very important.
But it doesn’t say loan anywhere. It says aid but I don’t think we qualified after I filled out the FAFSA.
Oh great. I see it now when I click view details. It calls it an unsubsidized loan. Does that mean we don’t get any merit? Or could we still be awarded some merit?
That’s so dumb. Why would they tell me about a loan? Of course I can get a loan.
My husband said the same thing. Why would we take out a 5,500 loan when we will owe 47,000
same thing happened to me. im shocked I didn’t get a scholarship. like sorry im not going to pay 43,000 a year
if you don’t mind, what were your stats?
Son has a 3.7 unweighted. Test optional. Wrote some pretty good essays for the IST Scholarships.
STEM2017 when did you get notified? Was it in your financial aid package tonight?
No notification. A new link appeared in son’s application portal. We only checked because of @OceanIsle’s post.
Yea but even with the merit award its still crazy expensive. Ive yet to see anyone get much more then that.
Penn State gives very little aid, merit or otherwise. Most students are full pay minus loans they take out. Always run the net price calculator for any school so that you know if it’s affordable and to set your expectations - Penn State surprises people every year, but it’s well known they are very stingy on aid.
y’all my test optional button disappeared what does this mean again?
you should get a decision at midnight
I just spoke to the office of student aid - this may only apply to my daughter but it’s probably good information just in case anyone else is in the same boat.
My daughter is a dual enrollment student at a local Penn State commonwealth campus. She’s a senior in high school and, but takes classes at Penn State New Ken for college credit as a “non degree” student. She took Calc I and a genetics class.
She is attending Penn State University Park campus in the fall in the college of IST. Even though she will be a freshman next year, because Penn State has her taking classes in their system, she is considered a “Continuing Student” and thus will not receive any financial aid information until June. Only “new” students receive their aid in February.
I’m not expecting anything but loans to show up but I was confused why I didn’t even see that. I did not expect she’d be considered a continuing student, but for their purposes she is. She took classes both fall and spring this year.
