Same. Son accepted last night LA criminology but must do summer session. I think it would be a good experience for him given he’s been mostly virtual all year, but if the summer session is also going to be virtual, it may not be worth the cost. So, we’ll see!
Yes, thank you!!!
For those that emailed or called after getting into a second campus due to major. When did you hear back with a decision?
Server still broken
A week later. Emailed late Sunday night 12/13 and heard back last night at midnight. Denied Smeal, so switched to LA.
Same here @Famfun, with the same major too. Hoping the wait is a good sign!
@isabeldanaa @Couglesrx01 are you guys in state?
Congrats! But, when you are at Penn State and want to switch back into Smeal won’t it be a whole process and tougher requirements?
same !! i tried calling but international calls don’t work for me but i emailed them instead
Still waiting here too. Fingers crossed.
No. No one is “in” their major until ETM (entrance to major) requirements are met. Involves 8 classes for Smeal and a specific credit window. All ETM classes can be taken as Smeal PMAJ (pre major) or DUS (undecided).
Yes, I get that but…for example, I got into CoE at Abington for 2+2. If I ask to get reconsidered for DUS and get in. Then I would still have to get into the college of engineering AND my major. If I do Abington I would already be in the college of engineering just not my specific major. Correct?
It doesn’t matter.
I assume CoE - you mean College of Engineering?
You STILL have to take the same classes. All ETMs can be taken from Engineering PMAJ (pre-major) or DUS. What you cannot do is go from Engineering directly to Business. You would have to go through DUS.
One advantage of being into you college directly as a freshman is that you would have an advisor from that College vs. a DUS advisor. That can be worked around by going to drop in advising hours of the intended college. Minimal other advantages.
The one thing I will say is that if you aren’t super strong with math and science, be prepared to put your head down and study, because Engineering has true weed-outs. Sometimes starting at a commonwealth campus is a blessing, because otherwise you may not survive those freshman courses.
So PSU COE(College of Engineering) no one gets Direct admission ? everyone has to go through ETM ?
Im kinda confused with this too. I think if you got into CoE then your in engineering but you still aren’t in a major rather just the whole College.
I think that’s the reason acceptance letter says “intended” major of blah blah I got that doubt last night
Does anyone say direct admission to major ?
this is mine…
I am so pleased to offer you admission to the College of Engineering with the intended major of Engineering (Pre-Major) for fall 2021 at Penn State Abington. We are excited to welcome you to the Penn State family!
@lucy_van_pelt as per the link looks like most of majors have ETM requirements this is a little crazy for the kids
this might sound dumb, but if you’re in state does it automatically give you an advantage to getting into up?
I agree that there can be a benefit to a Commonwealth campus start … especially in STEM. Same quality of professor but smaller class sizes, which has many benefits. One of them is that profs are more accessible. As I’ve said, I also am a professor … when students visit during office hours, they tell me it makes a world of difference. That’s not always possible in a larger setting — layer that onto weedouts. The benefit here is smaller classes to start (with Penn State rigor) but that classes also get smaller as students progress in their majors. The downside, of course, is a very different social scene, which depending on the student, could be a very valid deciding factor. My S21 doesn’t care so it’s an easier decision.
Also, about a week after his offer, my son was directed to a bunch of College of Ag scholarships, fwiw.
