Class or personal tutor for lsat prep

Is it better to take a structured lsat prep class that meets several times a week for several weeks or have several hours (thinking about 10) of personal tutoring? Also has anyone used Power Score in the Nashville Tennessee area? If so what did you think?

I’ve never taken a Powerscore class, but have read parts of their “bibles.”

There’s one for each section of the LSAT: Logical Reasoning Bible; Logic Games Bible; and a Reading Comprehension Bible. They’re quite good and are very helpful for “beginners.” Don’t be misled by that…The LR Bibles do take you through advanced techniques too, but the way they are written is very helpful for those who may not “get it” right away or aren’t naturals at this sort of material.

The course that I have actually taken is TestMasters, which is equally good and is in the TOP 3 for best recommended courses (both Powerscore and TestMasters are amongst the top recommended ones). …The difference I found with TM is that TM’s techniques are taught at a more advanced level right from the beginning. Many of the techniques are the exact same in the end, but it’s the way they’re explained. TM seems to assume a higher level of ability than PS.

You sometimes had to fill in the blank with TM’s materials and teaching style on your own. They assume you can get certain unsaid connections and move quite rapidly. There are pros and cons to both companies. I would research the topic more in depth…there are many reviews and opinions of both companies online. Take them with a grain of salt, but also see what PATTERNS emerge from reviews …you can more likely trust something you see over and over again. But be WARNED!!! TestMasters.net is the REAL TM company and not Testmasters.com (which is a fake one being sued by the real TM).

Lastly, I think a class setting is best, b/c 10 hours of private tutoring is NOT enough time in my humble opinion. A class setting actually allows individual help…you can always stop and ask the instructor questions. I believe a class setting should offer at least 40 hours of class time if not much more. And many students DO stop the instructor to ask questions…that was my experience.

One word of warning with TM…and possibly Powerscore…I think they are best taken IF you have lots of time to devote to doing the work from the classes. TM goes fast, so if you fall behind like in real school, then it’s hard to catch up and becomes a waste of valuable time/money. We had several students stop coming to my class…I think some fell behind…one girl I know for sure was very very very behind. She literally struggled with the first few lessons’ material at the very END of the class and she had been gone for a while. If you take a class make sure you spend at least (minimum) one hour per night reviewing and practicing the material outside of class.

One more thing… with a private tutor…you can really eat up a lot of time and not get much done.

E.g., A simple logic game in a CLASS setting can take 30 minutes to review. And even that sometimes leaves people with remaining questions (that we have to move on from, due to time constraints). …Imagine a private tutor going over a logic game and taking 30 -40 minutes on ONE game…that really can eat up a lot of time and money.

Whereas if you pay for the class you have several hour long classes several times a week and they go over lots of material and work problems for you in class. You don’t get constant private attention, but you cover more overall with someone’s guidance. You’d have to pay 5K, lol, to get that many hours I’m guessing if you go with a private tutor. If one has the money and money is NOT an issue, then maybe a private tutor could be better. But I think in general a class situation is more economical and helpful overall.

One thing about TM…they have a FREE homework hotline you can call during weekdays. So if you’re OUT of class and get stuck ona problem, then you can call that HW hotline and an instructor (they rotate) will help you go through your issues. It’s only four hours a day (different times based on where you live), but it’s a very very big plus!!! You should look into TM as well. I’m not sure if PS has a homework hotline that’s free.

You can think of the HW hotline as essentially LOADS of free private tutoring if you sign up for a class.

Another idea is to download an app for your phone. Some applications have great discussion forums and answer guides for every question. the one listed below includes practice questions directly from LSAC.
