Class overcrowding at San Diego State University

Hey so I just got into SDSU and was wondering if it’s hard to get class there. I heard that a lot of people have to take classes at the local community college because there is never enough space. Is this a fact or myth?

SDSU’s class schedule shows whether there are seats open in each class section. For the classes you are interested in (look up your intended major(s) to see what classes you should take), you may want to check the fall 2015 listings, and watch the enrollment numbers in the spring 2016 listings over the first few weeks of the semester (it does not appear that the spring 2016 listings reflect pre-registration yet).

Younger son is 2nd year CS major at SDSU. He has not had any problems getting classes as long as you are flexible with class times. You may not always get your preferred professor or time slot, but you can get your classes. SDSU is very generous with AP credit which will help you get better registration times. Also, for required GE courses they will continue to open up new slots as needed.

SDSU first-year student here.
From the people I have talked to it seems there are times where it can be hard to get into classes. That being said they told me that these classes were usually the general ed classes that have huge competition for use anyway.
On top of all this as a first-year student you get priority registration for your first two semesters anyway. The school does this with the intention that those 2 semesters you try to knock out as much of your GEs as possible and thus avoid logjams for them later in your academic career.
If you have any other questions I’d be happy to try and help.

This was one of my fears when I decided to go to SDSU, but i guess I was worried about nothing. I transferred in as a junior, so I don’t really know what it’s like for freshman, but at least from my experience I haven’t had a problem getting the classes I wanted. You might not get the classes you want at the time you wanted, so you might have to be flexible. Something to note is that SDSU is moving to the wait list system and away from course crashing. This should help students get the schedule that they want.

Tl;dr it shouldn’t be a problem

I may be a little out of place, as I am graduating this semester. However, I can shed some light on the subject, given my experiences. Most of the time, I’ve been able to get the classes I wanted. That said, I’ve always been able to get the classes I needed and ~95% of the time, the ones I wanted.

The previous posts are spot on, though, regarding being flexible with the times. As a CS student, I’ve had to be flexible many times. For (an extreme) example, this semester there are, so far, 2 sections of CS310; one at 8am and one at 4pm. Someone looking to register for CS310 might have to pick the super-early class. You’ll get one of them, but just be prepared for some of those cases where you need to either wake up early or stay up late.

I only have 4 classes left, and I’m fairly confident that I’ll be able to enroll successfully. Remember, think positively, and go with confidence! Then, come back here when you’re ready to graduate and reflect on the amazing journey.

I’m a parent of a third year Aztec. Like was said in the other replies, my kid has never had an issue with registering for classes. A couple of times, he has had to take classes at a later time during the day, but he’s never had to go to a community college due to lack of class availability. He’s on schedule to graduate in four years.

Here’s more information about the new “wait list” system that was referenced above:
