Difficulty getting into classes you need in order to graduate on time?

Hello,

I’m in community college right now thinking about transferring to SDSU and then one of my professors mentioned that “no one who transfers can graduate in just two years, it always ends up being three because no one can get in the classes they need.” Like do classes fill up so quickly that it’s this problematic? To the point of prolonging graduating on time?

I want actual current students to tell me how it is because maybe my professor just doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She’s expressed her disdain for SDSU as a whole, so she could just be biased and trying to deter us from going there.

I was considering gearing up and working hard to graduate a year early and now I’m afraid that might be totally impossible due to this.

My younger son is a recent SDSU graduate but started as a Freshman. You need to be flexible with your class times and professors but he got the majority of this classes with no issues. As a transfer, it may depend upon how many of the pre-req courses you have completed at time of transfer. SDSU also started using Waitlists for full classes instead of crashing classes which at least gives you an idea of where you stand. He did take a few classes during summer session to stay on track for a 4 year graduation.

I think this depends on a lot of factors. Such as if you work FT or PT or don’t work at all. That’ll effect your availability of classes you can enroll in.

There’s also the CA state budget that reduces or increases the amount of classes offered. For instance some classes are offered in the fall and those same classes are not offered in the spring.

Additionally, stats show that 80% of students who are transfers do graduate in about 3 yrs so your professor is right.
