We're running into a brick wall here. Our senator insists that dd list a class rank. Well, she's homeschooled, so that is a problem. We use an accrediting school out of Maine (NARS) but they do not rank. The lady at the senator's office said we should ask our public school for a ranking. Um, we don't have anything to do with them...she's not enrolled there. What have other homeschoolers done?

just wondering...is she a junior or a senior? Also...if she has taken standardized tests you could estimate her class rank. Like if she scored a 97 percentile...she would be 3 out of 100. Just a suggestion

She's a junior. I just wish we could find out what they will accept. We'd thought of using her scores to estimate a rank--she'd do pretty well. I think she's going to call the homeschool liaison fellow at the AFA and see what they say... They have a specific person to deal with homeschoolers...

Heartcross: Try not to distress too much. Homeschooling has become much more commonplace in the last 5 years and the colleges and academies are making adjustments.

For better or for worse, my observation is that the SAT and ACT scores will have more impact than class rank and grades in the scholastic evaluation process. It's one of the few "level field" comparisons of candidates that the academies can make.

For class rank, I suggest you just tell it like it is. If your daughter is the only junior in her homeschool class, just list her rank as number 1 out of a class of 1. I saw one homeschooled West Point cadet's profile that showed him as class valedictorian!!

Good luck.

I do not know what "the official" rule of thumb is but we homeschooled 13 years (K-12) and simply stated 1 of 1 on the class rank issues. It apparently "flew" fine as he got a Senator nom and he is now about to finish Plebe Year at USNA. (43 days, 21 hours and 31 minutes until Herndon but who's counting!) I am sure that the admissions offices have formulas or ways to figure it all out but this is what we did (and never received a single question from anyone on multiple apps) I did mention in a letter what his "class rank" would have been if they used SAT scores as an indicator. He did take 12 credits of private classes outside the home and did well in the "classroom situation" but they did not "rank" students.

For the noms I would suggest just going ahead and putting 1 of 1..that is just the way it is. I am sure their nominating committees will weed through the whole app and try to compare apples vs. apples as will the academy and the person you are speaking with is probably in charge of being sure the app is complete before they go any further (and they will not accept it as complete if that is blank) So...give them what they want, a class rank. The committees will weigh it all as they review apps.

Thanks for all the help. The 1/1 seems to be the most honest thing to do. They can see where she is in SAT/ACT land--seems odd to put it down twice. She will have 25 hours of college credit by the end of the summer, so they can compare her there. Congrats on counting down the days for the end of Plebe Summer--hang in there--to both of you!
