Is class rank in college just as important as it is in high school?

Imo, not really from what ive seen

Class rank sometimes determines if you will graduate with latin honors, if your school uses them.

At my college class rank was never mentioned. There were set GPA thresholds for graduating with honors (3.5 cum laude, etc.), but that was all.

I’ve honestly never heard of class rank being used for anything except choosing a Valedictorian, Salutatorian, etc. Honors are usually based off GPA and/or completion of an Honors College program. I’m not sure if a lot of schools even report it on the student’s transcripts.

They don’t put class rank on our unofficial transcripts and I’m not even sure they put it on the real deal. Never heard anyone mention their rank.

No. My department offers an award to our top student, but that’s it. (We also give several awards to outstanding students for other reasons that don’t necessarily correlate with grades (although they often do so), e.g. service to a campus organization.) Dean’s List and graduation honors are the only public acknowledgements of rank.

In individual classes, you won’t even know your rank unless the other students mention their grades to you. There is usually some mention of the students with the highest GPAs, but hardly anyone really cares about it.

The only reason I know my approximate class rank is because I’m in PBK where you need to be in the top 10%. Other than that, I’m not sure anyone knows at my U
