Class rank question

Hi. I just signed up for parchment and was looking at my transcript. I am in 9th grade, so I was just looking at this for a summer program. I hadn't really thought about class rank, I had just assumed they didn't do it at my school, but it said on my transcript my ranking is 3 out of 961. This is very good, but I'm just wondering, how exactly would one get higher grades than me? I have all A's, and I am taking the only AP class freshmen are allowed to take (AP Human Geography). So does that mean #1 and #2 are tied with me? Or what? Does the class rank count percent grades, or just letter grades?

In my school, class rank counts percent grades. They probably have better percent grades than you. If you were all tied, then all three of your ranks would report 1/961.

It varies by high school, but they’re either a) tied with you b) went around the system to take less standard classes and more honors/AP classes or c) had other circumstances (maybe they were homeschooled for awhile, who knows). In all honesty though, class rank will fluctuate a huge amount within the next three and a half years.

Ah, I see. Maybe percentage grades were being counted. I know that class ranking will change a lot the end of high school, I was just wondering. I had close to a B in Chemistry, so maybe that’s why.

Its almost always GPA based, but I think I know what happened. Probably the ones above you were able to take another AP class in addition to Human. Same thing happened to me, there was supposed to be a one AP limit as a freshman but some kids were able to pull strings with their counselors and get 2. Try talking to whoever is #1 and #2

Thanks hopefulRomanian, but I don’t know who they are!

For my district classes we took in eighth grade that contained high school credit were counted towards our high school GPA’s (for example I had speech, health, p.e., algebra 1, spanish 1, and some random electives). Also, as what other users have said, GPA isn’t usually based off just “is it an a or a b” in high school. A grade of 90-93, 94-97, and 97-100 all offer different gradepoints for my district, you should be able to find out this information on your district’s website.
