Hi,

I have some questions about my class rank because i just received my first semester transcript. Note: I'm a 9th Grader.

Rank: 61 of 880

1) What percentile am i in? how do i calculate this?
2) i have a friend with the same GPA as i do but he is ranked 36, why is that?
3) Can i improve it dramatically in time for college admissions? my goal is to place myself into the top 5%. (10th grade classes i scheduled are all honors and AP)

And also, forgive my ignorance, am i better off than that number one student who does no EC's? sorry thats just the anger fuming lol.

You're in the 93rd percentile. X/100 = 61/880; solve for X, then subtract x from 100.

There are different algorithms for ranking classes. They may be weighting grades, or breaking ties based on the number of units earned, or some such.

Class rank is usually final after junior year. You have one semester in the books, and five semesters to go. Your final rank will depend mostly on your grades for the next five semesters, and can go up or down, depending on your aptitide and work ethic.

Are you better off than a kid who does no ECs? I can't say. Prepare for the future, but don't obsess about it. Remember, high school isn't just a box you check off on the way to some imagined future. Don't forget to have fun.
