My guidance counselor informed me that I am ranked 37/527 in my grade. I have a 3.882 UW and 4.382 W. I know I shouldn’t compare myself, but I feel a bit worried about college with these stats as all of my friends are ranked at 20 or below. Will my own stats impact me from getting into schools like NYU? If so, what kind of classes should I take over the summer to help raise my GPA? I’m already taking four APs next school year (my senior year).
As long as you hit the top 10% (which you do) you should be good. Unless you are in the top #1-10, IMO, many college don’t particularly distinguish a difference in the remainder of the top 10%. That is just my opinion. Unless you are talking about schools in Texas, that is a whole different ball of wax). Many application ask if you are in the top 10%, top 25%, top 50%, below 50%.
At this stage of the game…going into Senior year chances of you increasing your GPA much beyond .10 are slim and moving rank more than 5-10 slots nearly impossible. Remember all of your highly ranked classmates are still working just as hard as you to stay at their rank spot. Also class size at large public schools (which it looks like you are attending) notoriously drop in size from junior and senior year as a lot of your lower ranked teammates drop out, move etc. So while your rank might not change your % could very well change and you may slip down a % point or two, through no fault of your own.
Don’t worry, just keep on working and you will be fine!
