I just completed my junior year of high school and then moved across the country. I’m worried about my class rank because my previous high school didn’t do class rank and the new high school I’m attending does. I wouldn’t be worried about my class rank if both high schools offered the same classes, however, the new school offers classes my other school didn’t have, such as “pre- AP” classes that count as 4.5 credits. The college counselor at my new school predicts that I will end up within the top quarter of my class, but I’m hoping to get into selective schools such as UVA. My question is, will admission officers take into consideration that I moved and did not have the opportunity to take these pre- AP classes, or will they just take it at face value? Thanks so much!!
Yes. AOs know you can’t take what is not offered. Your GPA will obviously be a 0.5 year GPA when you apply to colleges, which, while obvious to AOs, is something the GC can reinforce on the GC report.
That’s a relief, thanks for your prompt reply!
Yes, make sure your GC mentions in in their recommendation. You can also mention it in the Additional Information section of the common app. Not a bad idea to have it twice as apps get read pretty quickly.
Also, just fyi, I think colleges pay more attention to GPA than class rank these days since so many schools aren’t doing class ranks at all anymore.
Good luck!
