I have a very small graduating class (50 students). I’m number 6 in class rank, but it’s not in the top 10%, but it is the top 15%. What are my chances to get into a good college?
I think in a class that size rank does not matter. Too small to determine real rank.
Your class rank is meaningless without considering your actual GPA, the rigor of the courses you’ve taken, and the rest of your applications (essays, extracurricular activities.)
What type of school are you looking to attend (rural vs. urban, large vs. small school, LAC vs. university etc?)
the UC’s and some privates like Wash U, Columbia, USC, etc.
Has your school sent students to T20s in the past? If so, have you talked to your guidance counselor about your chances? Have you taken advantage of the AP/IB/Honors courses such that your guidance counselor will rate your course of study as most/extremely challenging on their letter of recommendation? Do you have extracurricular activities related to your field of interest?
Yes, some of our graduates have been admitted to T20s. I have taken APs and Honors. And I have work experiences related to my field of study. The rest of my ECs include things like leadership, community service, and sports.
Is your SAT/ACT (if taken) in-range? Are you currently a senior? If your school has previous T20 admits, then I’d highly recommend asking your HS Counselor—they’ll be the most familiar with your school’s curriculum and policies.
The UCs do not use class rank that is given by the high school. GPA as recalculated by UC methods is the primary academic-based number used in UC admissions’ holistic readings.
thank you!
