Number vs. Percent

I got my transcript the other day, and I found I'm currently 5th--which I'm not going to be all ccer-like and complain about. :p However, I go to a kind of odd public school (magnet), and I'm a member of the first class (I'm a junior--the first class will be the class of 2011), and we only have 67 people in our class. We gained 2 people after the school year started (we rarely accepted anyone new), and I expect my rank to be 5/69 when all is said and done.

Since I'm part of the first class no college has every heard of us. Will not being Top 5% hurt me? I doubt I'll be able to move past 4th. Also, will it hurt that my unweighted GPA is a 3.6 even though I'm in the top 5 people?

From what I’ve read, student from a small high school is at a slight disadvantage. Number 1 out of 69 is not as strong as number 1 out of 500+ students. But do your best is all you can hope for.

You might be okay I go to a small private school. My school doesnt keep ranks however I have also heard of a lot of other schools not keeping ranks. This is because dependent on how big or small your school is, it offers different/more AP’s Honors, EC and other things. You should talk to your counselor. In my opinion your class rank may only be superficial and may not even matter. The place where class rank does matter seems to be with your states public institutions. Thats what my counselor said when i asked him about my class rank so UC’s seem to want to see it and thats the only reason my school ranks. My first choice is a private Uni so it shouldnt matter for me.
